milk "not from rbST treated cows"

i just saw this in a kroger ad. the milk is on sale for $1.88. i usually spend at least $5 for a gallon of organic milk for ds.

if you normally purchase organic milk, would you purchase this instead?

Re: milk "not from rbST treated cows"

  • Most major dairies have eliminated using this particular hormone.  Dh works at Walmart.  Even their great value brand has eliminated rbst due to its connection with increased risk of cancer in humans.  That's just one kind of hormone though (this one boosts milk production).  It doesn't mean the cows were pastured, it doesn't mean they weren't given antibiotics, and it's no indication that thye haven't received other hormones.  For me it's a step in the right direction but it's not all the way there and its not worth saving the $3.  My milk isn't organic but it does come from a local dairy and is ASH  free.  It's also non-homogonized which I like (especially for cooking when I can skim the best cream off the top for mashed potatoes).

  • Ditto pp. I'm seeing rbST free everywhere on conventional milk now (Kroger, Walmart and Publix store brands). I agree that it's a step in the right direction, but the cows are still living in feedlot/CAFO type situations and  must be given antibiotics to be able to live under such conditions in the first place. And again, not any guarantee that other hormones aren't in play.

Fwiw, I haven't been hearing great stuff about Horizon's organic practices (see the GL board for more info). I've noticed our Kroger has 1/2 gallons of their own brand organic and I *have* heard excellent things about Organic Valley milk and milk products (but they're harder to track down; our Publix carries it, but that's about it in our area).
