Birds nesting near your house?

We've got 2 nests on a tree/bush right next to our house. My nanny just told me their family has always considered this bad luck, and asked us to remove them. One of the nests is right outside the window of DS's playroom - it's a beautiful red bird. The other is under the roof next to our bedroom window.

Have you ever heard of this being bad luck? Is there a way to remove the nests and move them to another tree or something? I don't want to distroy them :(

Re: Birds nesting near your house?

  • OMG I've never heard this and a bird just built a nest atop a window at the entrance of our house.  I wonder now.  I never actually SEE birds in there---and have no idea why they would choose THAT location.  I'm interested to hear what others say.

What is weird too is a bird just died climbing in to the flu (sp?) of our wood burning stove a couple weeks back.  That was freaky.

  • If you move the nests, the birds will likely abandon them. It seems pretty dumb to do that over some silly superstition (that I have never even heard about, BTW).
  • I've never heard of it being bad luck.  Annoying at times yes... but never heard bad luck.  Every year a family builds a nest under our deck.

I know, but the nanny was pretty freaked out and adoment about asking us to move it. I'm not superstitious, but she kind of freaked me out :((

  • I must be evil...or a bit crazy.. I LOVE the birds. I have bird houses, and nesting all over the trees in my yard. I even make sure there is seed in the winter so those that stay year round will stay in our area, and so that those that migrate will come back.   I love their songs...so relaxing.

Smiling76: The birds are probably nesting abouve your window at the entrance b/c it's sheltered and there may even be an air leak that allows more warmth.

Well, anyway, I think she's got it wrong. I just did a quick google search and the only bad luck is supposed to be if they come into your house through the door. The only stories I see about nests near the house say they supposedly bring good luck, unless it's a crow. And killing them is supposed to be really, really bad luck, so if you are pro-life you probably don't want to mess with the eggs at all.

Yes, that last line was totally tongue-in-cheek.

:)) Yup, I did a Google search too, but we're Russian, and I'm thinking that might be from the 'old country'. I've called my mom to ask about it, but she's busy at work. I'm thinking we might put the nest in a bowl or something and try to hang it on another tree farther from the house, but DH is now telling me that if we touch the nest, birds will likely abandon it...man, WHY am I so impressionate?!?!?!

  • I bet it is a Russian thing.  My husbands family is Russian and they are very superstitious.  No kissing in a door way, no shoes on the table (even brand new in the box), no handing a knife to people and a bunch of other stuff I can't think of right now.  The only thing bird nest near the house equals is a lot of bird poop near the house!

LOL, I just posted yesterday about how a couple robins built a nest on the railing of my front porch - and I did knock it down.  I felt really guilty about it at first, but the more I thought about it, the more I didn't.  Our porch is small (5 feet by 5 feet maybe?), and while it would have been cool to watch them nest, lay their eggs, etc, it would be way too hard and annoying with it at waist level - there was already bird crap all over our porch.  They had worked on it for a day before I knocked it down, and I wish I would have done it sooner so they hadn't put all of that work into it, but I didn't.  If it would have been anywhere but the railing, I would have never touched it.
