TTC W/0 A period... Follow Up

Hi Everyone,

I posted something a few weeks back about me not getting a period and how my hubby and I are TTC. Anyway, I went to the gyno yesterday and they ran blood work today, they took a prego test and it was negative and they want to have me back in two weeks for an ultrasound to make sure everything is ok with my organs and what not. I'm all very new to this since all of the ultrasounds I've seen have babies, none of them were my ultrasounds but my friends who were/are prego. The whole concept of not having a period is not new to me, my mom or my sister and has made TTC very difficult with all of them and in some cases has resulted in miscarriages, one of my many worries. On a side note, my gyno told me that if I don't have a period in 2 weeks (when I see him for the ultrasound) he will give me some pill to take and within 10 days I am supposed to have a period. I had no idea of anything like this, I will be in touch and let you know how it goes. Wish us luck.

BTW, How do you change your screen name? I can't figure it out. Secondly, some of the "codes" you ladies are using as I read some of the forums are foreign to me. IE: What does DH mean? I read it on a prior post. Thanks again.

  • Good Luck! I'm glad things are hopefully moving along for you.

You can't change your screen name. If you want a new one, you have to start a new account all over and use a different email address.

DH is "Dear" Husband (or if you're ranting - Damn Husband lol), DD is Dear Daughter, DS is Dear Son, DC is Dear Child.  If you have questions about any others, just ask. I know there's a list somewhere with all of them but I don't know what it is.

Thank you so much for the clarification.
  • Sorry to hear that you'll have to go back for more testing.  The pill to bring on a period and new cycle could be Provera.  That is what I was given.  The few times I had to take it, my period was very different than usual.  It was more like spotting for a week.  I had some side effects from Provera but nothing compared to the side effects of some other meds like Clomid.  Again, from my experience, the ultrasound will likely be internal to examine your reproductive system.  It's not the most pleasant thing but not painful.  I'm sorry to hear about your family history and I hope your next appointment brings you some answers.  Good luck!

    Christina,

You are correct.. the pill they would like me to take is Provera. You said you spotted, more than you had a period but you were at least able to conceive at some point since you have a baby in your pic. So, how did you go about getting prego? After taking Provera, did you get a period monthly or was it just that one time and spotting only? I spotted in mid April but it was a slight discharge, since then I haven't had anything. No period, no spotting, nothing.

You are also correct that they would like to look at my internal organs at the ultrasound to see if I am even capable of having childen. I'm scared to know the answer but I would rather know now then to beat myself up now wondering why I can't get prego. Thank you for all of your advice and guidance, I will let you know what I find out.

  • Sorry, I just saw your response now.

After taking Provera I did not get cycles on my own.  My initial internal ultrasound and bloodwork revealed that I have PCOS.  I went through infertility treatments (daily injections of Follistim, ultrasounds to monitor follicle growth, bloodwork to monitor levels (both of these 2-4 times a week), an injection of Ovidrel to stimulate ovulation once my follicles were mature, and what they call timed intercourse...basically the doctor tells you when to have sex) to conceive my son.  We did three cycles of this.  Prior to that I took Clomid from my OB, unmonitored, which I would NOT recommend taking it unmonitored.  You want to have ultrasounds to see how many follicles are developing.  IMO, it's dangerous for OB's to hand it out unmonitored.

I took the Provera after the Clomid didn't help me ovulate and each time it was just spotting which counted as a new cycle but I didn't ovulate again, even with another round of Clomid.  Everyone is different though.  Some are very successful with Clomid while others don't even need it.  Maybe Provera will kick start something in you and you'll ovulate!

I know finding out results can be scary but try and take it one step at a time.  I was devastated to find out my hormone levels were off then to find out that I had cysts surrounding my ovaries.  Although it felt impossible at the time, it wasn't.  It was more work then just deciding to have a baby and have sex.  It was painful to go through the whole process but worth it in the end.

I wish you all the best!!!

    Christina,

Thank you so much for all of the information you have provided me. I greatly appreciate it. I have been struggling a lot with the fact that I can't get prego. I feel like I am failing my hubby. Even though, we are still "new" to the whole concept of TTC it is still frustrating. My gf is a nurse and she told me that I shouldn't even TTC until this month (May) b/c I got off the pill Jan. 4th, had my period Feb. 1st and haven't had anything since. They say it takes a few months for the pill to get out of your system, plus the fact that I was on the pill for 10 years probably doesn't help, along with my family genetics of TTC. I try to remain positive but it's very difficult considering my DH and I have numerous (at least 10-12) friends who got prego darn near right away, within a month or two, so I feel horrible that it's taking me so long and I feel like I won't be able to give him what the two of us want.

I had blood work taken last Friday, May 7th and I received the call on Tuesday that all is well with that. I don't have any thyroid problems but now it's a waiting game until May 19th when I go in for my ultrasound at 8:45 AM and then head to my follow up appointment at 2 PM where my gyno plans to give me the Provera (or at least that's my understanding). What is the Clomid you speak of?

Anyway, Congrats on your beautiful child and thank you for all of your help.
