Babies: 3 - 6 Months

How many diapers does your daycare use?

My daycare uses 7-8/day.  That seems like a lot to me, but they write down all the times, they check diapers every hour, and they change hers every time almost.  I feel bad asking them not to change my baby as often, but man that's a lot of diapers!  They also use a whole pack of wipes a week.

Is that a lot or does yours do the same?

Re: How many diapers does your daycare use?

  • I don't keep close track, but it seems to me I buy a new pack every 2 weeks or so...which is like 4 diapers a day? That sounds reasonable to me.

  • 4-6...they change them every 2 hours, or if they poop.
  • This is the same for us...it's their policy and I absolutely hate it!  Since they change his diaper every hour (almost) we don't buy anything fancy...they get the Target diapers and we use Pampers Dry Max (which I like) at home where he only needs about 3 or 4 a day.
  • better than leaving him in a wet diaper, i guess!
  • We're not in daycare, but I have to change DS every hour.  Sometimes I have to change him right after eating and then again a 1/2 hour later.  He sleeps 9pm-7am, so I do around 14 diapes a day.
  • it's a state law (so the center claims) that they change her every 2 hours (unless sleeping) and use a MINIMUM of 7 wipes per change!!

I would say 3-4 diapers in 8 hours but sometimes I think it needs to be done more.  They provide the wipes.

    7 wipes per change??!!  WTF!

  • My daycare uses about the same.

    Seriously...7 wipes?!?!

  • Prolly about that, 5-6 is what I'm usually replacing in his diaper bag.
  • My daycare automatically changes diapers every 2 hours, so it's an average of about 4 per day, more if she has an unexpected poopie.  That seems like a lot to me, considering that DH and I seem to wait until the snaps at the bottom of the onesie pop open before we change her, but I think changing that frequently lessens the liability for the center, i.e. less chance for diaper rash/sores/infections/etc ... so, even if you said something to them, they probably wouldn't do anything.

Wipes, on the other hand, they use entirely too much.  My center went through two, 100-wipe packages in about 2 weeks.  That's an average of about 5 wipes per diaper change!  At home, LO has to have an enormous blow-out poopie in order for it to qualify for 5 wipes.  If there's only pee, I use 1 wipe ... poopies vary depending on the severity and volume of the poopie, but I've only used 5 wipes for one diaper change only a handful of times in 4-1/2 months.  But, again, I'm sure they use so many to limit the liability of the center.

And an unintended consequence is that LO now gets fussy around 2 - 3 hours for an 'automatic' diaper change.  I guess it's good that she likes her stuff clean.  lol

  • Our daycare's policy is to change LO every 2 hours unless he is dirty. They changed him more frequently earlier on when he was wetting more often. Our daycare is part of the hospital where I work and they use wash cloths instead of wipes and the hospital launders them.
  • She normally gets changed 4-5 times between 7 AM and 4 PM. I change her diaper and get her dressed at 6:00 AM and by the time we get to daycare it's normally around 7:15 AM, so I change her before I leave and then they change her 4-5 times after that.

  • 7 wipes per change????? That's INSANE! I don't even use wipes everytime...probably every other time (if it's just pee), and even then I only use one...what the hell are they doing with 7 wipes??? Now I'm intrigued.

7 wipes per change! That's just crazy and wasteful. If your baby only peed, why would 7 wipes be required?

Our daycare does changes every 2 hours, unless she is sleeping or poops between changes.

7 wipes.....wow!!!!!!!  I think I may have only used that many DS has had a super poop explosion!!

  • At least I'm not alone on the wipes issue.  DS daycare has gone through around 200 wipes in the last three weeks, which means they're using 4-5 wipes per diaper change.  I already told DH we're sending generic brand to daycare now & keeping the good stuff at home.

  • 3 or 4, we use cloth, so I know exactly how many every day.
  • 4-6 generally, but we CD so I'm really not concerned if they change her more often because I'd still be doing diaper laundry every 2-3 days regardless of how many times they change her.

  • Yup, 7 friggin wipes (was 5 when she first started). Minimum. And if they need more (WHY??) another teacher has to come over and get them out - and take 7 more! I kid not. I'm in Illinois if that matters. And it's why we're now members of Costco.

  • We use cloth so I can see how many each day.  It is a average of 5, she there for 8 hours.

When I asked the DCP why they go through so many wipes, she said something about a "protocol" they have to go through with each diaper change. I don't remember the whole thing, but I remember that they have to use a wipe to wipe their own hands and then another one to wipe the baby's hands in addition to the wipes they use on their bottom.

  • I change DS every 2 hours so that seems reasonable to me.  I also change him if he poops (even if I've just changed him). I would say I go through 7-10 diapers in a 24 hour period (he sleeps 7-7 so doesn't get a night change).

The wipes thing is nuts- that's putting more wetness on LO than they need.

They shouldn't be using wipes to wash their hands, they should be using soap and water. It is ok for the baby's hands.

Every daycare I have worked at changed diapers every two hours unless they were super wet or dirty before then. And it is insane to use 7 wipes per diaper change and I cannot fathom that it is actually a state law/regulation that they do so.

  • I think they use 5-6 per day. They provide wipes.
