Re: I think it's rude when...

  • I may get flamed for this . . . but I use it when I have the double stroller.

  • Dai - are you being serious?!

    Rude?  That's a stretch.

  • Loading the player...
  • I use it all the time when I have the stroller. Love them.

  • DD uses it all the time. She'll throw a fit if I try to go into a different door.
  • Not at all. It's not like it keeps someone who is actually handicapped form using it. I don't ever use it, but only because it opens so slowly.

    My son is obsessed, too.

Why on earth is it rude?!

  • Plus, it's nice to have a little door lady.
  • I use it when I have the stroller.  It's not like there are a limited number of uses in the button so that it is going to run out when a handicapped person needs it.
  • I think this is just a test to see if Nesties really CAN argue about anything!  ;)
  • I use it all the time when I have the stroller, too.
  • Why?

We use it all the time - always when I have the stroller - even if I just have a single stroller. I also use it if I have the baby in the wrap and  the girls are walking.

Yes, I'm being serious. If you're using it with a stroller, that's different, I have no issues with that. I find it to be incredibly wasteful and lazy. The door stays open 3 times longer than is necessary for an able bodied person to walk through, thus not only wasting the energy required to open the door in the first place, but also to keep the air quality of the building up for having the door open for that long.

I'm well aware that some people think that's stupid and trivial, but it doesn't change my opinion. If you don't have any need to use it and you do, IMO it's rude.

  • Why? It's not like a parking place where if you park there a handicapped person can't.

FWIW, I don't think it's rude to use the handicapped restroom stall either unless you are keeping someone who needs it from using it.

  • hmmm...i use it, but i usually have a toddler and infant with me when i do.  does that make it less rude to you?
  • If an able-bodied person is using it, it might be lazy of them but I wouldn't say it's rude.

It does bother me when I'm waiting to use the elevator at the mall with my double stroller and a group of able-bodied teenagers get in in front of me and leave me no room and I have to wait for the next elevator. That I think is rude. Just use the escalator a couple stores up.

  • Hhmmm, I could see calling it a waste.  But rude?!  Eh.  Don't agree but that's cool.

This may be the stupidest thing I have seen on this board yet. And I was here when Loukia used to post.

Same here....or any stroller, for that matter.

And I think "rude" is a stretch.  Unnecessary, maybe.

I guess I can see what you are saying...but I think I'd just call it wasteful then, rather than rude.  More like someone who leaves lights on, or cranks the ac up, or stands with the refrigerator door open (all of which I've been known to do).

Actually this is why they have revolving doors, isn't it?  They let less air out than normal doors even.  I guess you would call this a pet peeve, huh?  lol.  we all have them.

  • I use it when I have a stroller, my hands full, or the kids with me.
  • We need an AE to come visit. We are in some serious need for drama.
  • dear lord...Loukia.  I was a lurker back then.
  • My DH and I just love pushing the button. We're like kids.

    Why is this rude?

    image
  • I always use it b/c I always have a stroller.  I have never been entering when a handicapped person was at the same time-if so I would let them go first.  I don't see it as a big deal.  It is very convenient.
  • I don't think the energy wasting arguement is valid.  A lot of stores around here will blast AC in the summer and have their doors propped open.  I'm sure that wastes a lot more energy than using the automatic door opener.
  • Like I think it's wasteful not to bring your own cloth bags to the store and instead use up plastic  (or paper) bags...but I forget them regularly.
  • Eh, I use them all the time. My hands are generally quite full when I'm trying to get in and out of stores.

Then again, I use the handicapped restroom too! *gasp!* Rudeness abounds. ;-)

  • Rude? What?

They are there to increase accessibility. They're not to exclude use by anyone with a handicapped tag in their vehicle.

    this is bizarre.

  • I use it at the Dr's office when I have Ian, your darn right I am not touching the door with all of the germs. I hit the button with my elbow. Love it.

  • The air quality of the building?  Are you serious?  I think anywhere I've ever been that has a handicapped door button also has a vestibule/double set of doors, which I can only assume helps with regulating indoor air.  I can't imagine that the open/shut, open/shut, open/shut of the other doors causes any less distruption of air temperature than one staying open for a bit longer.  And have you ever seen someone try to wrangle a double stroller into a regular door?  I'm thinking it stays open way longer than a handicapped one in that situation.

Should I also be schlepping my stroller up the stairs instead of using the escalator?  I am able-bodied, after all.

And how RUDE of people to ride up escalators when I'm sure they could find stable stairs somewhere in the building to use.

  • The definition of "rude"

    1 a : being in a rough or unfinished state : crudeb : naturalraw <rude cotton> c : primitive,undeveloped <peasants use rude wooden plows ? Jack Raymond> d : simpleelemental<landscape done in rude whites, blacks, deep browns ? Richard Harris>
    2 : lacking refinement or delicacy: a : ignorant,unlearned b : inelegantuncouth c : offensive in manner or action :discourteous d : uncivilizedsavage e : coarsevulgar
3 : marked by or suggestive of lack of training or skill : inexperienced <rude workmanship>
    4 : robuststurdy <in rude health>
    5 : occurring abruptly and disconcertingly <a rude awakening>

Which of those is true in your scenario.

    Admit it....poor choice of words.

And it's no different than 3-5 ppl following each other thru the manual door, if you're worried about air quality.  And how much power is it really usiing?  1500 watts for 30 seconds?   A store that is burning hundreds of  lights in overhead fixtures is not going to notice on their utility bill if the door was used 10x less that month.

  • erm...

when did you become an anal-retentive hun ??  (mostly I just wanted to say that, I don't really think you are one)  But.. meh.  Not something I'd really worry about personally.

Yes, I agree. However it can be said that in those scenarios that person is only wasting their own electricity. While it does too have an impact on all of us in a small way, doing it somewhere else is more wasteful.
