Babies: 0 - 3 Months

Flying alone with baby

I'm flying with DD tomorrow, by myself.  If you've done this, do you have any tips?

I think my biggest concern is feeding her.  I EBF but we're dealing with thrush right now, so after each feed I have to ointment my nipples, change my breast pads, and swab her mouth with nystatin (oh, and of course wash my hands).  How I'm going to do that without passing her off to a stranger or flight attendant is beyond my realm of imagination at this point.

Re: Flying alone with baby

  • We just flew over the weekend and it was a lot of work and DH was with me.  How long of a flight is it?  Could you nurse in the airport before boarding and then when you land?  I know they say to have the baby eat or suck on something during landing and take off because of the pressure change, so maybe you could use a pacifier.  My LO slept through the whole thing even though I tried feeding him during take off.

  • You will be fine.  I've taken 6 flights alone  to date with my son (I work for an airline).

Flight attendants are VERY used to holding babies so the mom can use the washroom.    Also ask once you board which washroom has the change table in it.  Often it is only the rear washroom.

And if your baby is asleep, don't worry about nursing on take off and landing.  I nursed on one take off because he was awake.  He slept thru all the landings.  The white noise knocks them out.

Oh and don't bring more than you can handle in terms of carry on. Limit yourslef to the diaper bag and a purse at most. Remember the baby is also going to be in your arms as you board.

  • No help here :( sorry! But I'll be flying out from FL to CA on Saturday. So I'll be checking back to see what advice you receive.

Once I go through this experience, I plan on writing a post about it for others to use as reference... that is if all goes well Big Smile

    Good luck to you tomorrow!
