2 week BF baby - longest time between feeds

I have been feeding LO around every 2-4 hours, avg being 3-4.  I have been waking him up if he gets close to 5.  But he seems okay when he is sleeping.  He is close to 8lbs now and was 7lbs 12 oz at birth.

My first son was a chunker when born at almost 10lbs and the ped told me he could go longer periods of time because he had more fat stores.

Kelly mom suggested 3-4 hour intervals, but it seems to me that if he is sleeping and content that I could let him go.  This would also mean more sleep for me at time which would be a huge bonus.

FYI - my milk supply is not a problem and his latch is pretty good.  Actually I have more than I did last time.  I pumped after my last feeding at 9:30AM and got 11oz (combined from both breasts) in 10 minutes. It's almost 2:30PM now, my breasts are full, but he is sleeping.

Any thoughts would be appreciated.

Re: 2 week BF baby - longest time between feeds

  • I was told that once she reached her birth weight there is no need to wake her and pediatrician suggested I don't.

  • I personally don't go longer than 3 hours during the day, so I wake her up if she's sleeping (well, sometimes I'll let it go 3:30 if she's asleep, but no longer than that). I do this because it gives her more food during the day so she can go longer at night. She is currently sleeping anywhere from 5-7 and a half hours at night, and I don't wake her up at all.

Don't know if that helps, but that's what I do. :-)

  • My OB told me not to wake ds, if there was a weight issue then it would be necessary.  He has gone 5hrs at the most.
  • I don't let her go more than 4 hours during the day at night I do not wake.

  • The longest DS has gone is 4.5 hours (last night).  But I notice when he does that he wants to eat every 1-2 hours before bed (cluster feeds) and then right when he wakes up and then again about an hour later.  If they are at their birth weight I think it's okay not to wake them but allow them to make up those feedings they miss at other times in the day.
  • Ds eats every 2 to 2.5 hours during the day. I do wake him up to feed, but I like to feed him a lot during the day in hopes that he can go a little longer at night. It seems to be working, since he has been sleeping for 3 hour increments at night lately.

I do pump after an hour (if he has been napping in his bassinet) and I get about 2.5 ounces (for both breasts combined).

Wow! 11ounces, that is a lot. I wish I had that kind of supply!
