Babies: 0 - 3 Months

Tummy Sleeping

DS likes to bury his face in his blankies when he naps on a cushy surface!! I keep having to turn his little head!!

Anyway... DS sleeps MUCH better on his belly. I know that stomach sleeping increases the risk of SIDS, but I'm trying to figure out why this is for a normal healthy baby.

Do any of you stomach sleep your babies at night and feel comfortable with it? Right now I only let DS stomach sleep when I'm watching him. (i.e. napping on the couch or bed next to me.)

Thanks!! :)

My SIL tummy sleeps her babies, and so far so good.

I had a friend who used to put a pillow on their son's belly because he liked he pressure (similar to being on tummy), you could try that if he doesn't sleep well on his back.

  • I don't let her sleep on her stomach at night, but I'm pretty sure she would sleep better if she were allowed to. :(

She sleeps SO well when she is napping on my chest. She really seems to hate being on her back, so putting her to sleep like that is a challenge.

  • Hey lady!

I think it's bad because if Jake throws up his face will be buried and he might asphyxiate.

Not for nighttime because I just don't feel comfortable having him like that while I'm also sleeping, but he takes every daytime nap on his tummy (on his playmat actually) because I can keep my eye on him.

Once they start to roll there's no choice  :)  My DD slept on her tummy starting at 4 months or so because she'd roll herself over (I always put her down on her back though).

Hey you!! How is life with a two month old?? :)

Yeah... I don't know. I feel like he'd choke more if he was on his back..?? I always put him to sleep on his back at night, but he only sleeps well that way if he's swaddled or in his Woombie, and he's starting to want to be free, which means he doesn't sleep unless on tummy lol. It's a lose lose situation!

  • Liam loves sleeping on his tummy. I'm okay with this because he can turn over from tummy to back.  He sleeps great this way... STTN last night :)

  • I do exactly what you do, short mid-day naps. (usually on a blanket on the floor or in the pnp).  SIDS risks decrease with each month of life so as DS grows I will tummy-sleep him more frequently until he sleeps tummy full-time at 6 months (because @ 6 months the risk is less than a tenth of a percent- unless there are other risks like premmies and babies with diagnosed issues.)
  • I don't put DD2 on her belly or back, I put her on her side and she sleeps great like taht

  • I do! and have since week two and every baby I have in the future I will aswell! I have done plenty of research on SIDS and know of two people in my personal life that have had babies pass away due to SIDS..neither of them were on their back. But thats besides the point. You need to do whatever is right for you and your baby. If you feel uncomfortable with it then try side sleeping, I know of a few friends of mine who have had great success with side sleeping. You can use a sleep positioner or rolled up receiving blankets...but most babies feel more comfortable sleeping on their tummies..SIDS is not something to take lightly but they still dont know for sure what causes it. It has been linked to low serotonin levels in the brain. GL!
  • Gianna has been a belly sleeper since 2 weeks old. I was really nervous but she wouldn't settle down. My mom really convinced me to do it because myself and my 3 siblings were belly sleepers and we are all peachy! That being said Gianna has been able to turn her head left and right while on her belly since birth so I was not worried about her getting stuck face down or in a blanket. She also likes to sleep with cloth in her hand and nuzzled to her mouth. I think we all need to realize that SIDS is a risk but has been hyped up a lot and Dr.'s continue to discuss it to cover themselves. I read an article about SIDS and the is new information that states SIDS may have a genetic link. If I can find the article I will repost it!
  • No way am I letting my Lo sleeps on his belly with blankies on a cushy surface.  Not safe!  My LO sleeps in his bassinet with a tight fitted sheet on his back and wearing a Halo sleepsack swaddle.  I know people say that they have let their LO sleep that way with no problems.  Yeah, but there are ones that did have problems and those babies aren't speaking.  Not worth the risk.
