We didn't mainly because they were going to end up napping in other places that won't be dark such as the car or the living room in their swings. We have lined denim curtains in the nursery and it does just fine, our house faces east so they get the morning sun and it has never interfered with their sleep.

We didn't either because I wanted them to be able to sleep anywhere. I was worried with it getting dark later at night that they wouldn't be able to go to sleep, but it doesn't seem to bother them at all.

My 4 yr old twins still share a room. We got them around the time they were 2 or so. It was still pretty light in their room at bedtime in the summer and they were having a had time settling down. The shades help a ton. Plus it keeps their room cooler.
I never have closed the curtains/shades, though some people swear by it. My kids have always napped regardless, and I am glad b/c the less I make them dependent on things, the better they sleep/more flexible they are.

We don't use them, but I can definitely see the benefits!
