I'm my own worst enemy when it comes to sleeping

Okay, the twins SUCK at sleeping but... I can't sleep during the day(never have been able to), any noise whatsoever wakes me up and once I'm awake many times I can't fall back asleep.  And when I try sleeping on the couch outside the baby's room (which is my bedroom - my husband sleeps in a completely different room so they don't wake him up) so I don't hear every little sound then I worry that someone is in there choking and I can't hear it.  There has to be a prescription drug that would give me the ability to relax enough to fall back asleep 10 times a night but still sleep lightly enough to wake up 10 times a night if need be.  So anybody got any ideas?  I've tried Unisom which leaves you groping around like a drunkard in the middle of the night making bottles and finding pacis and then feeling hungover during the day, Benadryl isn't strong enough and I could eat Melatonin for breakfast.  I've always been a bit of an insomniac but this is ridiculous!

  • I wish I had advice, but I don't.  I'm the same way, every sound wakes me.  I actually sleep with earplugs so that I don't hear everything-- I am so sensitive to sound that even with earplugs in I often wake up to their cries before my husband who doesn't use them.

I am tired already today because I couldn't fall back to sleep after we fed the boys around 5:30/6.  My husband fell asleep within 10 seconds.  Hmph.

Ask your doctor about medication-- I have taken Trazodone for sleep before and not felt too hung over from it.  Let me know if you find the miracle cure!

not trying to show off, but i just had my first 2 nights in a row where i did not wake up to go to the bathroom (and then fight to get back to sleep).  i sttn all the way!!!  think it was the first time in like 10 yrs!

anyway, re. the kids and worry, and light sleeping.  unisom has really helped me, but i would not have used it early on!  and i don't take it often.  lavender eye pillow helped me get 20min here and there during daytime.

only advice at this point is to wear ear plugs.  they are wonderful!  if your dh is home and you are sleeping right next to their room there is no way both of you WON'T hear them when they cry loudly.  hearing every little sound and running in doesn't help them learn to put themselves to sleep, and doesn't help you get rest.

re. the choking worry... well, i still have that kind of thing.  just live with it.  but you will be a better mommy if you get some rest.
