    Wonderful! Thank you so much for all the recs.  We ended up just staying in Portland - it seemed like too much gear to rent a car for only the weekend - but we were thrilled we did.  We shopped, ate, shopped, wandered the neighborhoods...  It was great.  The weather totally cooperated and the river walk was so nice!!  We will definitely go back and do some exploring outside of Portland - such beautiful country up there!  Thanks again!
