I just read on Kellymom...

"Drink liquids to thirst (don't force liquids - drinking extra water does not increase supply), ..."

Really? I'm trying to increase my supply and I thought drinking more water would help.

  • Nope just makes you pee way more.

  • Ok this might sound weird but I swear when I ate a pint of ice cream regularly, that I produced more milk!   Maybe it was wishful thinking but I ate lots of ice cream when I could!

LOL, I wish that would work. Too bad I am off dairy for the next month to see if DS has a milk allergy.

Eating and drinking doesn't make your body produce more.  But your body does need calories and fluid to make milk so it seems reasonable that if your daily intake of either is borderline low an increase is going to help your supply.

  • I read that too. Don't think I'll try the beer-a-day method.

  • Hmm, I'm going to go ahead and disagree with this with absolutely no scientific backing - just the fact that when I drink like crazy during the course of a day I end up with way more milk pumped at my late night pumping.  Also, the beer thing totally works for me - have a couple beers after the baby goes to bed and I will wake up hurting full in the morning.
  • Heck yeah the beer thing works- but in my experience it's got to be a darker beer. My Miller Light won't do it but if I have a St Arnold's or Shiner or something along those lines, I notice a difference.

  • Any advice for non-beer drinkers? I have one every once in a while, but on the whole I just don't drink often. I think I over did it in college and now it has no appeal for me.

  • I don't know - I feel like I'm thirsty all freaking day.  I drink about 80-100 oz, but it's mostly because I want it.
