? about OB appts and US's

did you have an ultrasound at every appt?

I went in yesterday for my appt, and no us. just the doppler and then was told to come back in 4 weeks. I don't know if I am being paranoid about this or if it's completely normal.

Re: ? about OB appts and US's

  • Starting at 12w, I stopped getting an u/s at the OBs, and starting going to a MFM doc where they do the scans. I get an u/s every 4 weeks for now.

I never get an u/s at the OB's anymore, just weight/BP/check for HBs/measure my belly & chat.

  • no, the only time I got an u/s at my OB's office was b/c she couldn't get both heartbeats on the doppler and got me in for a quickie u/s just to make sure they were ok.     But, I do schedule monthly u/s at the MFM area of the hospital (the same place they do the NT scan and big 18 week u/s.)    My OB gets the results of those.

Same thing happened to me. My last appt (14 weeks) they just did the doppler and I was told to come back in 4 weeks. They only do an u/s if they have a problem finding both heartbeats or distinguishing between them. Starting at 19 weeks though I will see a MFM so I'm hoping for some more "special treatment" at that time!

I also want my OB to explain to me  how they tell the difference between the HBs on the doppler. I bought a home doppler and I can't for the life of me figure out how to know if I'm hearing the same beat twice or two different ones.

  • So far, yes, every appt I've gotten an u/s.  OB said I'd be getting A LOT more u/s than a singleton.  Not sure if at every appt, but more u/s is wonderful.  LOL

I am becoming a lot more paranoid.  I actually scheduled an u/s for this wk w/ my RE, even though I already "graduated."  Just want to make sure all is well.  Then 2 wks later I go in for the sequentual test, and the following wk I have an OB appt... obsessive much?!

  • I did have one yesterday at the OB office. However, it was only because she was having trouble determining if she located both heartbeats on the doppler. So I had a real quick one.
  • No. I had one with the Nuchal Translucency test at 13 wks (that was when we found out we were having twins), the big U/S at 19 wks (usually 20, but I moved it up due to a business trip) and then a growth U/S every 4 weeks ever since. The OB visits were monthly up until 28 weeks and now every 2 weeks. All they do is check urine, weight, bp, and use the doppler to check HB. They measure me at some visits.

I also started weekly non stress tests at 32 wks. All the u/s and NSTs are at maternal fetal medicine, not the OB office.

This has all been for an uncomplicated pregnancy.

  • It depends if you're seeing a regular OB or a MFM.  Most regular OBs don't do an u/s every time.  Mine certainly doesn't.  She'll probably do more toward the end to monitor growth, but for now, I'm on the same u/s and appointment schedule (4w between) as a singleton.

  • I get an ultrasound at every OB appt. They just do a quick one to check heartbeats.  Then I get a full ultrasound every month at the maternal fetal specialist.

I've had appointments at 6, 7, 9, 10, 12,14, 18, and 21 weeks.  I've had u/s at every appointment.  However, all but, the 12 and 18 week apts have been simply to check heart tones.  The 12 wks was my CVS testing and the 18 wk was my big u/s.

Next week 23 wks) I will have u/s every 3-4 wks for growth u/s....

ETA-I'm just seeing my OB.  There is an MFM in the practice that I'll see if a problem develops.  My regular OB takes very, very good care of me.  Sometime to good.

  • I got one at 6w 17w, 24w, then every 3 or 4 weeks.  Some OB's do them at every appt, some don't.  My OB said that a multiple pg isn't really much different than a singleton at the beginning.
  • yesterday's appointment  (19 weeks) was the first time I didn't have a u/s. MY OBGYN just used the doppler.  I am now also seeing peri, so I have an anatomy scan every 4 weeks.
  • With my first pregnancy I got an u/s at 13 weeks, 20 weeks, and then 35 weeks.  I expect a few more this time, but at my last appt (last week) she said see ya in 4 weeks.  I have my NT scan this week.  All my u/s are scheduled separately anyway with MFM and not my OB.
  • Yes, my ob/gyn does a super quick one with a portable u/s machine at every visit just to check heart beats and position.  But these last maybe a minute.  I have growth u/s every 4 weeks starting at 20 weeks and these are more thorough.
