I cannot for the life of me get into planning DD's birthday party. I've done big huge blowouts the last 2 years with cute themes and awesome unique cakes.
I had this problem too. Every year I feel like I have to out-do myself for DD #1's birthday. DH and I talked about it and this year was her final big b-day bash w/ family/friends. We (just dh, myself, and her sister) are still going to celebrate and have a nice dinner, a few presents, and a cake for her..but it won't be the giant celebration like it was for the last 3 years. Then, I figure I might let her have a few big b-day parties when she turns 5, 10, and 16.
When I was a kid, I always had the option for either a party or to take a friend to a special place. What if you took one of DD's friends for a fun day at Sesame, had cake there, and had that be her bday?
Our local zoo has parties that are pretty inexpensive, too, and you get to have a live animal interaction, etc.
