Christening vs. baptizing

Which did you do and why? Or do both words mean basically the same thing to you? This is all only your opinion...this isn't a right or wrong discussion at all.

Re: Christening vs. baptizing

  • I always thought they were the same thing, just depends on the denomination.  ?  It's not like a church offers you a choice between the two, KWIM?

We chose baptism as that is the sacrament performed by the Catholic church.  (DH is Catholic, DS will be raised Catholic)

  • We don't do either, we do dedications. It's all variations of religious views, I think. We dedicate her to God as a baby, because we believe she will chose to baptized when she is old enough and fully understands. That's just our view though. :)

Yep, this is what we do. The Bible teaches that the person must choose/decide to be baptized as an act of obedience to God.....babies can't really do that :)

  • we are dedicating LO on sunday. I agree with Adriamichelle83
  • Baptism is the actual sacrament (Catholic), but I use Christening as well (not really sure if that's correct or not, I never thought about it)
  • They mean the same thing to me.  We'll be baptising/christening dd later this year.

My children are being raised Catholic, so they are/will be baptized.  It all depends on your faith/denomination/etc.   There really is no right or wrong answer....

This is what we do too.  And I guess I always thought that christening was the term for infant baptism and baptizing was what we did by choice.

  • We baptized DS Catholic at a month old, before we moved. If he chooses to remain Catholic he can get confirmed in HS.

If you don't mind me asking.....   what did your little guy wear for a baptism outfit?     And...where did you get it?   I'm due in July and want to have our new little guy baptized in August.   I'm having a hard time figure out what he will wear and where I can get it.  Sears seems to have outfits, but only starting at 6 months.

     No no, wasn't being rude!

  • to me they are the same thing- just different names for different denominations.

We baptized B in the Presbyterian church at 4 months old.  Like PP's said-  he can get confirmed at 14 if he chooses to.

    This.

ETA - to me it just seems like a matter of semantics,  or denomination-specific wording. Same idea.

I am catholic. My children received the sacrament of Bapism. When they are older they will choose (I hope) to be Confirmed Catholic.
