Tips on cutting LO nails

I've done it a few times, but still worry that I am not cutting enough of them off and she keeps scratching her little face. The last time I did it I got a little of her skin, and while it didn't bleed it did leave tiny little scabs. :( My LO is a light sleeper and always wakes up when we do it then, and usually I get DH to hold her still, but I keep thinking that there has to be an easier way.  TIA

Re: Tips on cutting LO nails

  • We do it while he sleeps, but if that doesn't work I know some do it while they eat. DS kept scratching himself until I realized that I wasn't getting the corners of his nails enough. Maybe try that?

  • I've used a mini nail file before, works ok at least you can smooth the sharp edges.
  • This is totally gross, but I bite them while she is eating.

Me too!  Then I smooth them with a file.

  • I always use small scisors to cut her nails, and do it when she's sleeping.. I don't feel confortable with nail file..

  • I majorly cut LO's thumb last night.  Maybe I should try the biting thing, bc nail file isn't working, nail clippers lead to wounds and currently LO has dirt under her nails (so gross but I dont know what to do!)

I had 3 moms tell me to do this. I was grossed out initially but too afraid to actually cut them with nail scissors so one night while she was eating and pretty zonked out I bit them....works wonders.
