Preemies

seasonal allergies...??

Long story but Andrew has been congested for a month, and his reflux is really bad.  We can't figure out why.  Nose isn't running.  Doctor doesn't feel it's a cold (been a while) or allergies (too young).  He's 13 mo adjusted, 16 actual.  Not sure if it's just simply because his reflux is bad.

Are seasonal allergies more prevalent in preemies? Anyone have any other thoughts?

Re: seasonal allergies...??

  • his nasal tissues could be swollen and irritated from the reflux. it's the bodies way to clear irritation by increasing mucus production. the nasal passages and the mouth connect so that could be the problem.

is he on any reflux meds?

  • Jonathan has reflux, and has been on Prilosec since he was 4 weeks old.  It seems like, since spring has arrived, he has had allergy problems.  Sneezes, coughs, runny nose constantly, but without the fever and being rundown with a cold.  We're hoping once the pollen count goes down somewhat that it'll get better.

  • this is FAR OUT...and probably not the case...

but i have sinus polyps that present as congestion/sinus infection/trouble breathing when they're full blown. i was actually on antibiotics for the first 3 years of life almost consistently with "chronic sinus problems" (probably how i developed APS) and they never could figure out what the problem was. finally, they did an xray of my chest and caught just the bottom half of my face on accident- it was completely occluded! so, i had a polypectomy at the ripe age of 4, and had chronic problems through my later teens as well. at 22 i got checked again- and was totally occluded again. they said i should get vacuumed out at least every 5-10 years now. great, eh?

i'm a huge fan of non invasive testing/treatments... i would encourage them to do some more to try and find what it is. (though it's probably just random and not serious. :)
