Calling all GD "Bump-sperts"

Yesterday took my three hour glucose test- yeuck!

Today I get the lab results.  According to my midwife- I don't have GD but I am "glucose intolerant" which they treat the same way- meet with the diabetes educator and set up a home testing program with diet and nutrition.

I still don't get my numbers and my appointment isn't until Wednesday- can someone fill me in on if this is "normal" for GD.

Fasting- 70 (limit= 90)

1 Hour- 164 (limit= 180)

2 Hour- 171 (limit=155) This is the one I don't get- did it go up from the 1 hour number because my body couldn't handle the glucose.  I would have thought it would still go down or stay the same- didn't think about it increasing.

3 Hour- 128 (limit=140) This one confuses me too- is it "normal" to compensate that much and get a normal number.

Did anyone else have to go through all the GD stuff with just one elevated number?

 Thanks for all your help!

  • I haven't heard of glucose intolerant, but I'm by no means an expert.  I know that for my 3 hour, I had to pass 3 of my 4 draws, but only passed two.

Sounds like maybe your body had a little bit of trouble processing the glucose, but not GD territory.  They're probably monitoring and having you do the diet to be on the safe side, which certainly isn't going to hurt anything.  I personally think that they should just give every woman the GD diet plan at their first appointment - there's no reason not to, and it ensures you get the proper amounts of all of the important nutrients that you need.

  • I also just had one elevated number- a 188 after the first hour of the three hour test. My doctor has me on the same diet and monitoring that I would be on had I failed all of the tests. At first I was really annoyed but to be honest, its been a good thing. I still have a couple of numbers on occasion during my glucose testing that are a little high but for the most part I've been able to manage things really easily. I haven't gained anything since the diagnosis (in fact I've lost a couple of pounds) and I know in the long run its better for the baby.

Hope this helps! My doc is very conservative but I figure I'd rather be safe than sorry!!

  • I only had one elevated number too and it was only elevated by TWO points. At first I was so ticked off that for two stinking points they were going to make me follow the diet and test my blood four times a day. Technically according to ACOG guidelines you need to fail two tests to have GD, which is why they call failing one test "gluclose intolerance". I really thought everything was going to be normal and was sort of arrogant that my numbers would be fine. But sure as sh*t my fasting number is consistently high so I will likely be going on meds soon. Looking back it is a good think they were so conservative.
  • some docs use the fail two guidline and some the fail one. I guess it is better to be safe.  Maybe they will have you test for a few weeks to check your numbers and if your numbers are ok you will be off the hook.  Good luck and let us know what they say.
