S/O Plagiocephaly

What is the difference between plagiocephaly and just a flat spot? Anything? Nothing? Now that DS finally naps regularly he has a slight flat spot his head. He's napping/sleeping with a Boppy Nest Noggin so I am not worried about it but I was curious.

Re: S/O Plagiocephaly

  • Our LO's were born on the same day and they both use a Boppy Noggin Nest...too funny.

Plagiocephaly is the medical term for flat spots or flat heads. There are three (maybe 4) different kinds of plagiocephaly, one of which is for a completely flat head  as opposed to a flat spot on one side. I'm asking our pedi about this today because I'm concerned with DS's head. We just got the Noggin Nest a few days ago and have been making an extra effort to turn his head to different sides after he's asleep (he usually sleeps flat on his back and never turns his head). I sent a Noggin Nest to day care as well, and told them to use it when he's in his carrier, bouncy seat or the swing. Here's hoping it works and our little man doesn't need a helmet!

  • It's the same thing.

We noticed it right away, did 3 months of physical therapy and its not going away. We've used the Boppy Noggin the entire time too. The doctor said it would months ago, but it hadn't. I ended up seeking a second opinion and was referred to get a helmet since it'll never go away on its own. Apparently for us to get a helmet we had to prove two months of physical therapy to get the script to get one. It's surprising how my pedi didn't think it was a big deal. It's a huge deal, my kid is going to run of out hair quickly like my father!

Keep an eye on it. There is a limited period of time they can treat it.

Thanks Ladies. DS has a flat spot a few months ago and the nest noggin totally rounded it out and we'll be putting him in different positions like last time as well.

  • Repositioning and using the noggin works for kicks without neck injuries or kids without really bad flat head syndrome
  • I wish we'd known about the noggin nest like 3 months ago!

Well, in bad cases.. It doesn't help that much... No worries.

  • You should consult your ped if you think its that noticable and see if they think its worth p.t. or a helmet.

I dont think it's that bad. I think I think its worse than it is because I'm his mom. DH didn't even notice it. But we're definitely going to talk about it at our appt on Friday. Thanks!
