Are a baptism and a christening the same thing? How old should my baby
be for this? Do most churches require any type of class or membership?
I'm new to the area and haven't gone to church in a really long time!
Yes it is the same thing. I had my daughter baptized on 4/10. We are somewhat regular churchgoers, we have not became members as of yet, that is the next step. I would find a church that you are comfortable with and then go from there.
We also just moved and don't have a home parish. We're Catholic, and we're having DD baptized this weekend, usually Catholics baptize between 6 weeks to 6 months. We just called the nearby churches to arrange it. I needed this weekend because my brother is from out of state and is her godfather so we had to have it while he was in town. We have a class to attend tomorrow.
Re: Christening Age?
the Catholic church requires you take a class before your first child is baptized.
LO will be 5 months. It doesn't matter how old though. I was baptized at 3 days.
Baptism
a Christian sacrament signifying spiritual cleansing and rebirth
Christening
giving a Christian name at baptism
However old you want them to be, unless your church or culture has a prefered age.
Many churches require at least a class.
Call around and ask. They won't bite. And if they do, you don't want to go there anyway.
My DS was almost 9 weeks old, which is older than my DD was. His would have been sooner, but it was Lent so we had to wait until after Easter.
We had to go to a Baptismal prep class before my DD was baptized, but not this time.
