Turning LO's head?

DS loves to sleep with his head to the left - that's how he was in my belly. But I'm noticing the left side of his head is getting kinda flat and the right side is a little rounder. My friend said to turn his head while he's sleeping but he doesn't seem to keep it turned very long. Plus I'm not sure I want to do anything before talking to his ped. But in the meantime...anyone have similar experience?

Re: Turning LO's head?

  • Yep. I have no clue what to do either so I'm asking today at her pedi appt. I have been putting her toys to the other side of her while she plays on her back to try to get her more comfortable with turning her head the other way though.

  • I just had my LO at her appt and asked the same thing, he said she has torticollis and now we have to do home streches and she will be starting physical therpy.

  • Luckily we haven't had this problem but our pedi gave us some tips on how to avoid flat spots...

He said to turn LO's head, constantly move their toys to different locations, and also to move their bassinett to different locations in the room. He said a baby might like to stare at a certain window, or light, or anything else that catches their interest, so if you move the bassinet around it will cause them to face different directions and avoid the head becoming flat.

He also said they sell special helmets that fix the shape of the baby's head but they are expensive.

You can try putting LO's head at the opposite end of the crib to see if he'll turn his head the other way.

  • My DS is having the same problem! I try to turn his head but he ends up turning it back. It's harder at night too because I don't want to wake him by turing his head because I have finally gotten him to fall asleep!

  • i try to make sure i turn DS's head each time he sleeps - if i turn it when he is sleeping - he stays asleep... it can't hurt to try - you should try to turn your LO's head so he/she isn't always sleeping the same way
  • The pedi today just said to physically move LOs head in the other direction and to do these exercises a couple times a day. Also, keep toys and other things to catch her interest in the direction she needs to turn to help her build those muscles. If we don't have any improvement by her 4 month appointment we'll do physical therapy. I guess as long as you start any needed PT by 6 mos your okay. Hope this helps!
