numb hips while sleeping?

lately I change sides about . . . oh. . . 15 times a night because I wake up uncomfortable with numb and sore hips.  I have always slept well on my bed, use support pillows, etc.  What gives?   Anyone will some tips?  Thanks!

Re: numb hips while sleeping?

  • It could be your sciatic nerve. It happened to me on my left side between 12-16 weeks. It was painful and I would just take tylenol which barely helped. I talked to my doctor about it and she said I could go to a chiropractor (because my sciatice nerve was also affecting my ability to bend over) and alternate between ice packs and a heating pad. The heat really helped. Fortunately for me, it just cleared up magically on its own after a few weeks and I haven't had any problems. I hope yours does too! Oh and it really helped to just not lay on the side that hurt if at all possible.

  • yes, it's mostly my left!  thanks so much for your input.  I have heard about sciatic nerve pain before but never put 2 and 2 together (thought it be more leg/back pain).  I am having difficulty bending too!  Glad to know it went away on it's own after a while.

  • I had this problem with my last pregnancy and it also seemed to be more on my left side.  I started seeing my chiropractor and she said it might be a nerve wrapping around my waist. She showed me some stretching exercises and it went away.  It started now with this pregnancy, so I've started my stretching and it's helped alot.  Try getting on your hands and knees and stretch out your hips by moving to the opposite side of the hip you want to stretch. Do it for about 30 seconds at a time.  Hope it helps.
  • Sorry, no tips!  But I wanted to let you know that you're not alone - I have the same issue.  Sometimes when I'm reading on my left side at night, I notice that it starts with a tingling feeling followed by the numbness.  I'll switch sides then it happens again on that side.  I too am waking 10-15 times a night with the problem.  I hate it!  Does yours happen in the same spot everytime?  It's just a small area, like fingertip size point that is affected for me.
