Daybed vs rocker/glider in nursery

I am really struggling with this.  Let me preface it with we have a tiny 2 bedroom house and currently sleep in a full-sized bed.  I have been going back and forth on if it makes sense to put a daybed in the nursery/2nd bedroom or not.

On the one hand, I think since I will be staying home at first and DH will be working, it might be good to be able to sleep in the room with the baby part of the night so DH can get some sleep.  Also, if one of our moms wants to come stay with us and help, there is currently nowhere else for them to sleep except on the couch in the living room.  And finally, I wonder if as I get bigger at the end of my pregnancy, it would be nice for me or DH to have somewhere else to sleep since our bed is so small and already cramped - and my snoogle hasn't even arrived yet!  ;)

On the other hand, putting a daybed in there is going to make things cramped, the room is not big.

I guess my question is, would it make sense to put a daybed in there, and if so, then do we also need a glider? We could make it all fit if we had to, I am really more concerned with the cost.

Thanks ladies!

Re: Daybed vs rocker/glider in nursery

  • I went back and forth with furniture and arrangement SO much with my first nursery! I know it can be hard to decide what to do because you can't imagine what life will really be like!

I think in your situation, I would get the daybed. Mostly because you guys have a full sized bed and I know we get cramped in our queen. Sometimes you are going to want to lay down with LO when they are being fussy and that would be easier in a daybed by yourself. Plus it will be nice when you get bigger like you said, and also will make it easy to take the baby in shifts. Also good for guests. So I see a lot of pros to getting a daybed and the only con is the lack of space in the nursery. Well it doesn't really matter if it is a little cramped, its just a bedroom for a baby and functionality is better over looks.

As far as the glider- you probably don't NEED it. Some people love them but I hardly ever use mine. I sit in bed with the LOs when they can't sleep, which isn't often. I never got in the habit of rocking mine to sleep, which is one reason they are such great sleepers now!

  • I can't speak to the day bed but we love our glider/ottoman and still use it 203 times a day for nursing, reading, rocking, etc...  It has been fabulous for teething too.  DD loves the rocking motion when things get to be too much for her,   and while you can sway/rock on your feet, the glider is MUCH easier.  Also, if you plan to nurse, the arms of teh chair were better than the boppy at first for me.

  • We are keeping a twin size bed in our nursery b/c we also have only 2 bedrooms.  My mom is planning on staying at least one night a week b/c she'll be doing 2 days of daycare for us a week.  We needed someplace for her to sleep and the couch is not an option with her arthritis.  Luckily, we have a large 2nd bedroom so we were able to swing both the twin bed & the rocker; however if I had to choose I'd definately keep the bed.

It's already come in handy on a few nights when my tossing & turning/shifting positions with all my pillows has caused DH to migrate to the other room.  And I also think it will come in handy if we have a rough/late night while I'm on maternity leave and DH has to be up early for work.

  • A day bed in a nursery is a great idea for just the reasons you said. It seems like the day bed would benefit more people than the rocker would. I vote DAY BED!
