XP: Is he hungry or just uncomfortable?

Whenever LO begins to whimper at night, I try to feed him ASAP before he even has a chance to wail.  But sometimes he seems like he's not interested in latching (if it's only been like 2 hrs since his last feed).  Is it possible that he just wants changed and it's not yet time for a feed?  That would be nice to know in case I am "force feeding" him.  Has anyone found this to be true of their LO's?

Re: XP: Is he hungry or just uncomfortable?

  • My boys make all sorts of noises.  Many times they do it in their sleep or they fall right asleep after whimpering.  I don't take it as a sign of hunger.  The blood curdling screams, on the other hand

  • I try to wait until my LO is actually crying because a lot of times she will whimper for a second and go right back to sleep.

  • I usually wait a few seconds before trying to feed. If DD is hungry, she'll start rooting for my breast.
  • I try to feed my LO before he starts crying but I have found the whimpering noises not to be hunger as he isn't interested in feeding then. I will check on him and if he is also smacking his lips, sucking on his fist or sticking his tongue out, I will feed him and he eats well. Also, if I wait until he is screaming it is much harder because he is REALLY hungry by then and is hard to console him enough to convince him to eat.
