Hey CURLY GIRLS (FFG?) I have a ?

I have a question.

So, I have been doing the Curly Girl Method, but I have never wrapped my head for longer than an hour or so. My question is, would it be ok for me to sleep on it with my head wrapped? Or would my hair be a disaster?

Re: Hey CURLY GIRLS (FFG?) I have a ?

  • Why don't I know what the curly girl method is?!

All I know is, once I'm done BF'g, I can't wait to get the keratin treatment....wash and go!

  • Ok, what is the keratin treatment? LOL!

Google Curly Girl Method, you will see what I am talking about.

  • Loading the player...
  • I follow a low-poo, non-sulfate conditioner, no comb type method and I 'plop' my hair in a t-shirt for about 15 minutes.

Do you mean going to bed with it wet/wrapped? Or wrapping dry hair at night?

  • ahhhhhh!  You must know about this if you have curly hair. Keratin, is, essentially, protein.  They slather on the keratin, then use a straight iron to dry it.  You can't get it wet (or put it in a clip, behind the ears, etc) for a few days. It's not as extreme as the chinese hair straightening, (which takes ALL the curl out), but rather, it relaxes your curl and tames the frizz. And the best part? It's great for you hair, bc it's putting protein back in.  So it's a win/win.  Only downfall..it's expensive, but it last 4-6 mos....but the more you do it, the better it calms the hair, so it has a cumulative effect.

I use a sulfate-free shampoo---but why was I under the impression that ALL conditioners are sulfate free and I didn't have to specifically buy a sulfate free conditioner?

  • Not all conditioners are sulfate free, in fact, most of them DO have sulfates.

I only buy sulfate free as well. And, Target now has a whole section dedicated to the Curly Girl Method/sulfate free products. Its awesome.

Awesome. Way to go to ruin the keratin treatment I had put in my hair before Lila (by using any old conditioner) Super Angry

I'll have to check that out. I buy my sulfate free stuff there as well- the sulfate-free line by L'Oreal.

I use Deva Curl products -- love them though I don't like the smell of the Angel gel. But I still use it.

I think it would be ok to go to bed with your hair wet/wrapped. Let me know how it goes...

  • Sulfates aren't the only problem.  Silicones and other things found in styling products and conditioners are, also.  The silicones are not water soluble, so they need sulfates to remove them or else they will build up.  It is a vicious cycle.

I've never slept with my hair 'plopped,' but a lot of people 'pineapple' their hair (put it in a ponytail on the top of their head) to sleep.  This is usually to get second day hair.  I've never tried it, because I like to 'wash' my hair every day.

I use super cheap products.  Suave Naturals conditioner for my co-wash, Garnier Fructis Triple Moisture conditioner for my conditioner, and Herbal Essences Curly gel.  I recently purchased a 'low poo' from a health food store, since I'm working outside this summer.
