RDI?

Our Behaviorist sent us home with a DVD by the founder of RDI. Does anyone have experience?

Re: RDI?

  • This DVD is 5 hours long. This guy sits for FIVE HOURS and talks. I only made it through 3 so far & I feel very initiated into the process...

The Behaviorist said the downfall of the program is that it acts as a standalone and she didn't like the ethics of them asking you to sign something saying you would participate in this therapy alone. Since I wasn't too sure what she was talking about when she said that..... MAYBE she was talking about the therapists who were training and not the parents, but I really thought she was talking about parents.

But when she handed it to me, she felt strongly that some of the stuff on this DVD would change my mind about DSs  therapy options.

    I think it was successful.

  • Auntie - this is fascinating to me that you said this about the EI Moms as this is precisely some of what I'm going through.  My state has crappy services and I seem to live in an area with few private resources.  I'm finding it sooo frustrating that I can't even get someone to tell me exactly what services I need (let alone actually provide them).  I actually believe in including this stuff in our everyday lives, especially now that I know I have 2 guys living with this.

I called the TEACCH folks this week just trying to get some input on the plan I've put together for the summer.  Basically I just wanted someone to look at it objectively and tell me if they thought I had enough therapy in there, the right therapy, etc.   Instead, all I get is this cover your a$$ type answer about how they can't approve therapy plans, blah, blah, blah.  I don't want a signed legal document, I'm just looking for your opinion.  Ditto when talking about whether or not I should consider a psych consult for some anxiety issues we are having.  The school system obviously won't tell me what they really think he needs as older DS is only getting an hour of services a week (which seems pretty typical in my area).

It just seems nutty to me that they expect me to just "know" and I'm left feeling like I'm just experimenting with my DS.  Especially since the therapy strategies are so highly dependent on the individual child.  Am I expecting too much or am I not asking the right people the right questions?

Auntie - if you care to elaborate, I'd be interested in knowing what the overlap is between Floortime and RDI and also what the differences are. I've gone through 8 weeks of Floortime training, but have no clue about RDI. Kinda don't have the dough right now for RDI, so maybe I could just swing it by myself?
  • I don't know the difference, can't chime in on that one. I was thinking floortime was more scripting and RDI is basically anti-scripting. I've found several blogs of mom's who are going it alone with RDI. I can't say I agree or disagree with trying to do that at this point, but just like you hopanka... I can't afford it right now, so I'm going to learn what I can and try to decide.

There is a free RDI workshop in my area this weekend & if she shares any materials that I could upload for you to see, I will gladly do that.

Breezy - that'd be great if you could do that! Thank you!

Auntie - thanks for the explanation.
