3rd Trimester

Extra fluid in baby's kidney?

I had an u/s about 12 days ago with a specialist OB (not mine) because of placenta concerns from my son's pregnancy and this one as well. Anyways, one other concern was too much fluid on one of the baby's kidneys. He said this is something that is fairly common in boys and he'll have me have another u/s at 34 weeks to see if it's cleared up. The fluid measured at 6 mm and was on the right kidney.

Of course, I make myself crazy Googling and see it's a soft marker for Downs, and things about babies needing surgery after birth to repair this, etc....The dr. did ask if all my testing was normal. (It was, Down's risk was 1 in 1000, Trisomy 13 was 1 in 10,000 etc....)

I haven't talked to my OB yet (I see her next week) but I was just wondering if anyone else has had this experience with their baby having extra fluid on the kidney. TIA!!

Re: Extra fluid in baby's kidney?

  • My LO had/has this.  We went for a level 2 ultrasound and it wasn't even showing up anymore.  The high risk doctor told us it's the number 1 reason women get referred to him and it's almost always absolutely nothing!  He said we need to make our pedi aware of it just so the baby is checked again at birth but not to worry.  He also said Googling is the worst thing you can do! :)

  • We had this at happen at one of our earlier ultrasounds.  The dr. wasn't too concerned but scheduled another ultrasound for like 6 weeks later I think.  He said usually if it a problem than it will show up as a problem early on.  Well at that next ultrasound there was still fluid but nothing to worry about.  I haven't had any other ultrasounds and the dr. hasn't said anything else about it.
  • I'm lurking, but wanted to come in and reassure you!

We had this show up on an ultrasound for DS at 36 weeks.  He was born totally healthy and they did an ultrasound on him in the hospital and it still showed the fluid.

We had another ultrasound at 6 weeks old and the fluid was still there, but not as much.

We have another ultrasound at 6 months.

Basically, our LO has no complications whatsover, and our pedi said it's extremely common in little boys and almost always resolves itself by 1 year of age.  We just keep monitoring it with ultrasounds and it's really no big deal at all.

    Please don't worry!!!

  • My LO has this in both her kidneys - I can't remember what 6mm is, but I think that's a mild case..  Mine has moderate in the left kidney and mild in the right.  I did the same thing as you and googled it like crazy.  It's just about the most common thing that can be found "wrong" in an U/S,  I've met with the pedatric urologists and they said surgery is an absolute worst case scenario and it's highly unlikely to be necessary.

Once my little girl is born, she'll have to go on antibiotics and then when she's a week old they'll do an U/S on her since they can get a much better read on the situation then from the in utero U/S.   I've asked one million and one questions, and they have all assured me that I shouldn't be concerned.

You're really early in your pregnancy, so there is still plenty of time for this to just correct itself before birth too..  GL!

  • My LO has the same thing. Basically I was told what everyone else is saying...but just wanted you to know that there is another person in the same boat as you!!
  • Hi, my little girl was diagnosed with Bi-lateral hydronephrosis ( fluid on both kidneys) at 21 weeks.  It was a very scary time and I was told the same thing you were told regarding soft markers for downs syndrome.  Anyway, I'm now at 34 weeks and my baby's kidneys are normal.  We've had seveal ultra sounds every month since February.  At our last appointment ( 31 weeks), it appears that the condition resolved it self over time which was one of the scenerios we were told could happen.  My Perinatalogist said that sometimes pregnancy hormones can cause this problem and that's why it often times resolves before or shortly after birth for most babies.

I think you should give it some time and try not to worry eventhough I know that's very difficult to do.  It sounds like your baby has a mild to moderate case and will most likely not be an issue with time and age.  I'm sure things will work out just fine.  Peace
