BFing Moms

Did you start working out while bfing? I would get on the elliptical very occaisionally last time, but didn't seriously work out at all. Monday I did my first real workout in about 3 yrs, then Tuesday I did a pretty decently high impact 30min cardio - after that my supply really lagged, like a lot I think. I even pulled a bottle from the freezer stash last night. Did you notice a difference when you worked out? Any tips for me? I drank water & tea like crazy but it wasn't seeming to help. I didn't do anything yesterday & today yet and I think I'm meeting evan's demand now.

Re: BFing Moms

  • Ruh roh - this worries me. I had my 6 week appt today and was cleared to work out so I was going to start on Monday. I hope it doesn't affect my supply any. I guess I'll wait to read the responses....

  • too lazy/tired to type much but my short answer would be to be sure and drink more water.

I started working out at 6weeks once I was cleared.  Drink lots and lots and lots of water.

  • I'm going to hit it again in the am - I can't imagine being able to force down more water but I'm going to try! I'm just so tired of having no energy & being out of shape!
  • i agree with making sure you drink a lot of water.  i worked out pretty hard while breastfeeding, lots of spin classes.  anyway, you know you always have a higher supply in the morning.  i never expereinced any demand issues, but always worked out in the morning (at 5am) then came home and fed my DS.  maybe try that...

DS gets up between 4-4:30, I nurse him then head to the gym & try to get back by 7:30ish to catch him getting up for the morning. Hopefully it was just a fluke!
  • I think you should just ease into it.
  • We started P90X this week... I noticed a little dip with my pumping, but Sam is still getting enough.  She ate a little longer than usual yesterday (like maybe by 5 minutes) but she was full and happy afterward.  I drank 4 24oz Tumblers of water yesterday, I hope that's enough!  Also make sure you're eating enough calories to fuel your body with all the milk production and working out!

You probably need to double that.  I read 100oz for BFing moms.  I make my minimum at work to be 64 - plus 1 big glass at home AND 4 cups of Mother's Milk Tea.

    Yes - I pee all.freaking.day.

Wow. I don't drink anywhere near that amount of water. I drink 4 16 oz bottles of water and then I have a few other drinks (a glass of juice and maybe a caffeine free diet soda). I plan on starting to excercise on Monday. I guess I really need to ramp up my water intake.

  • I didn't work out when I was bfing/pumping because of the dips in supplies.   I lost all the baby weight without working out, I contribute the bfing/pumping to that.

*Bad me* is just now trying to get back into working out.

  • Hmm...this makes me worried.  I already am pushing it to pump enough and have nothing left over for the freezer.  I wanted to start the 30 day shred next week, but now I'm worried about a dip in my supply.  I may try it, but if I have to pull from the freezer I may cry.
  • I drink three quarts of decaffeinated tea and a 44oz water everyday - then there is added in watered down juice and the half gallon of milk I drink a day.  I know it sounds absurd even to me once I type it all out, but I've always drank that much milk, I make a fresh pitcher of tea every morning, the water is at the gym and on the way home and then there is whatever else I grab for myself during the day.

I've already lost all the baby weight - I weigh now what I did when I got pg with Aidan; but I need to firm up big time and I also wouldn't mind losing 12lbs more to be at my pre-wedding weight. It's more of a self-image thing to me at this point than a real push to lose weight.

  • Ditto pp that said you should increase your calories.  I was surprised at how many more calories my body needed to keep up with DS.  I know "they" say you only need 500 extra calories but it seemed like my body needed more.  (and I lost all baby weight, plus more...)  I never had a regular workout schedule but did get plenty of walks around the block and I did notice a dip in my supply if I wasn't eating and drinking enough.  Good luck!

  • I worked out starting at about 5 weeks with #1 and didn't have any issues, sometimes he wasn't as interested in nursing for a little while b/c it can change the taste of your milk temporarily, but no supply issues, but then again, I never had supply issues (produced too much!) - so I may not be a good response :-).
  • Just wanted to update that it must have been a first two days thing because I'm not having the same issue now.  But I am also not pushing myself as hard as I normally would either, I think if I were keeping the intensity of the first day up it could potentially make the difference. I keep having to say baby steps, baby steps - grrrr.
