If your baby drinks lactose-free formula

I have DD on the Parent's Choice sensitive formula. She didn't have reflux or anything, the regular formula just made her so constipated and since 3 months old she has done really well on the sensitive kind. I am worried that she since she hasn't had any lactose in her diet that it might be a shock if I introduce yogurt and then later on cow's milk. Did you slowly introduce lactose formula back into the diet first? Any suggestions?

Re: If your baby drinks lactose-free formula

  • Good question!  We're in the same position and I was wondering about that.  I am thinking yogurt and cheese will probably not be as big an issue as cows milk. I'm hoping DD has outgrown her lactose issues by the time we get there.

  • C is on soy due to a milk allergy.  Our pede said not to transition to whole milk until a year (not before) so at that point, we'll start and hope he's outgrown the allergy!
  • my son is on nutramiagen ... a hypoallergenic formula the doc told me (since i stay home with him and can watch him all the time ) That I could start to work some yogurt in very small amounts at a time to see how he felt. He is about 8 months 3 weeks now and we just started this about a month ago. Hope this helps

  • When we began formula, we started DD out on Similac Isomil because we had a free sample of it - she didn't have any issues that led us to believe she might need dairy-free.

Anyway, one of the first solid foods she loved was yogurt. She ate it with no problems whatsoever. She now eats all kinds of cheese and yogurt with no problem.

ETA - we didn't start solids until 8m, and yogurt was one of the first.

  • Is your DD lactose intolerant?  Or does she have a milk protein allergy?

Baby D has a milk protein allergy.  We've tried transitioning her from Nutramigen to regular cow's milk-based formula a couple of times (with no luck - she still reacts to it).  We started by adding 2 oz of regular formula into her bottles for a week.  Then 4 oz for a week.  Then 6 oz.  Until she was completely on the regular formula.  Unfortunately, a week after being on the regular formula (and being CONVINCED she was fine with it) she started throwing up.  Sad  We're back to 100% Nutramigen right now.

  • DD was on Alimentum (broken down proteins and lactose free) and two weeks ago we transitioned her to a lactose free formula to see if she's outgrown her milk protein sensitivity.  I'm going to try giving her yogurt (I read that the lactose is easier to digest in yogurt because of the active cultures so I figured it was an easy way to test the waters)  If she does well with it, I'll try the regular formula in a few weeks when she finished with the next few teeth.  (I'd hate for her to have teething pain and stomach issues at the same time.)
  • DD may be lactose intolerant, there were a lot of issues with milk based formulas but once we switched to soy, everything improved greatly.  My dad and myself are lactose intolerant and my hubby had a milk protein allergy as an infant too. We started her on yogurt at 10 months and she loves it and has done great with it.  She does not like the yobaby yogurt thought, she would just prefer the whole fat yogurt with her fruit puree mixed in. Already she is a picky eater haha :)

we did basically the same thing!  I thought we were in the clear and then he just started throwing up like crazy :(  That's why I'm not even trying regular formula again and will see what happens at/after a year w/ whole milk.
