Babies: 3 - 6 Months

rolling

I meant to post this awhile back when there was a bunch of posts about LO's rolling over. I kept hearing that people's LO's were rolling over from their back to their tummy first. This made me worried that my LO is behind! She can pretty easily roll from tummy to back, but she's not even close to being able to roll onto her tummy yet! Is this normal??

Re: rolling

  • DD rolled a few nights ago... a few times. And not again since.

back to tummy OR tummy to back?

  • My DD has not rolled over yet, AT ALL! She will roll to her side, but thats it. Every child goes at their own pace. Im not worried about it all.

  • Most babies do not roll from their back to their front until 5-6 months.
  • DS will only roll from tummy to back on a soft surface, and hasn't yet rolled from back to tummy...just to his side. I'm not worried, really, he's getting the hang of it, and getting closer to it every day.

If you want to try and help her along, you could lay with her, and when she tries to roll, just give her a little help...so she knows what the motion should feel like.

see that's what i thought, but I remember this one post awhile back where numerous people were saying that there 3-4 month olds were doing back to tummy first.

  • Every baby is different.   Some do back to tummy first and at a younger age.  Both the norm is 5-6 months.

Mine can get from his back to his side.

He only rolled from his tummy to his back for the first time this morning.

  • My DS has never rolled from tummy to back. He is a pro at rolling from back to belly though!
  • From what I understand it is more common for babies to roll from their belly to back first and at an earlier age. It is usually easier for them. My daughter rolled from back to belly first (so the opposite) at about 4.5 months. A few days later she rolled belly to back. For weeks it looked like she was trying to roll back to belly before she did it. I never saw her even try to roll belly to back. I think the first time she tried, she did it.

  • my DS is an expert roller from back to belly.  He does it all night long.  I was worried at first, but he always has his face to the side and seems to like sleeping on his belly.  The ironic thing is that he HATES tummy time!

    Back to tummy.

  • DD had a 3 mo appt and the ped asked about rolling. My response was she was trying but couldn't quite get there yet. He said that was great and that I shouldn't expect her to until more like 4-5 mo.
  • we're not rolling at all, and she's almost 6 months. She'll do it when she's ready.
