WDYD Re: feeding your sitter

We've had a non-family sitter a few times, but it's only ever been after 7 p.m.  We're having a sitter in a few weeks and she'll be coming at 5:30.  Since DS will be having his own "meal", should we provide something for the sitter to eat too, since it's during dinner time?

  • I think if I was babysitting at that hour I would eat before I came.  But I think it would be nice to have some snacks and drinks for her/him.

  • Whenever we have anyone sit, we get a papa murphy's pizza.  That way the sitter can dictate when he/she wants to eat.  Plus it's cheap and delicious too.

  • I would.  Maybe ahead of time you could ask her what she/he likes to eat to you'll have it available (within reason of course). Or leave money with a couple of take out menus on the table (although you do run the risk of the sitter pocketing the money and just eating from the kitchen cabinets.....who knows).

  • Papa Murphy's is a good idea. Sandwich fixings or something simple like that is all I would expect.

  • I have a night nurse sometimes to help with my boys. I always offer them dinner. If I made dinner, I offer her that or any leftovers or other food we have in the fridge. Sometimes she'll make a deli sandwich or eat yogurt or what we had for dinner. I think it's a good idea just to keep random possible dinner items in the fridge and that way there's always something for a visitor, especially if I have no time to make dinner that day... which happens pretty often.

This, plus maybe have a frozen pizza in the house just in case?

  • Working in daycare, Ive done a lot of babysitting for the families and the one I babysat for most often would always leave me money to order a pizza. I typically ate before I went there but there was a time or two that I ordered dinner.

  • Yes, I always expected food when I babysat in the evenings. Generally we'll leave pizza money, but depending on the sitter, I might have a home made dinner waiting as well. When I was in college, I loved babysitting at houses where they'd have a home cooked meal for me to eat!

  • I would feed them.  For now, my parents babysit.  I usually forget and if they haven't eaten, I feel bad.  The least I can do is get them a pizza or hoagie. When I babysat a million years ago, the parents always fed me.  In the summers, the mom used to come home @ noon just to bring me lunch. She always made sure there was Tab in the fridge too.  Yes, I'm old.
