We flew to Illinois for my LOs baptism about a month ago. My best advice is probably the most obvious! Come prepared!
I nursed her on the way up, then let her sleep briefly (which I never let her do.) When she woke, we (my husband and I) just kept her entertained with new toys she had never played with before. I needed to change her once in the airport bathroom, which was a fun experience. Then I nursed her on the way down again.
When I flew back by myself (!), I asked if there was availability to have empty seats around me and there was! They were very nice and let me have an open seat on either side of me. Then I could take on the carseat (which I couldn't do on the way there since I didn't purchase a seat for my LO.)
Security was what scared me the most, and it turned out to be fine. Even by myself. The TSA people seem to really be familiar with how to help someone loaded down with baby gear, breastmilk and a baby!
Good luck! One more thing to put in the baby book!
We flew to FL when DS was 2 months old and it really was pretty easy. Going through security scared me, but the TSA agents were really helpful. As soon as they saw me pull up to security with a stroller I was whisked into the "family" line and got to go ahead of everyone! They helped me close the stroller and put it on the belt for X-ray and then opened the stroller again since I was holding DS. I had the bottles of pre-made formula out for them to inspect, but they didn't even question them.
We were able to check his stroller & carseat for free right at the gate. It was nice being able to have the stroller for the airport.
I fed DS during take-off and landing and he slept during the flight. The hum of the airplane put him right to sleep. The only problem I had was that I got really hot from holding him.
Make sure you pack PLENTY of diapers/wipes and formula/water (if you FF). You never know if you'll get stuck on the tarmac for hours.
Re: First Flight...any tips or tricks?
