Anyone made prunes?

Has anyone on here made prune puree for LO?  Any tips?

DD is backed up after eating a bunch of crap at Grammy and Papa's this weekend, and I''m hoping to get her moving a bit.  The texture of prunes sort of worries me though-I'm afraid they won't puree correctly.

  • I did.  It didn't really get her moving (! took more than 24 hours) and gave her hives.  She doesn't go easily, though.  She was probably better off with just the juice (no reaction, eventually works as well).  From what I read, they do not freeze well.  I steamed and pureed.  They were thick, but I added some pear juice and it loosened it up.  They were expensive, too.  Oh well.

  • We've never pureed them, but I have given them to B before. Actually this was a daily meal for about a month when he first started solids.

What I did was to take a couple dried (we used Sunsweet) prunes and put them in a bowl of HOT water, and let them sit for about 45 minutes. This will get them nice and reconstituted, and rather squishy. Then I'd take a fork and mash them really well (after draining them!), to a good smear. Then I'd add about an ounce or two of formula to it, depending on if it was a proper meal, and thicken it with oatmeal to the consistency he was eating at the time. He actually really enjoyed it, far more than juice, and it worked really well.

  • I just buy the organic pureed prunes.  I haven?t found prunes at a our local grocery store that don?t have a preservative listed as an ingredient.   For us though pears actually get things moving faster than prunes.  Not sure why this is or if it's true for every baby, but I would also try pear puree.
