Mixing BM and Formula?

Does anyone do this? If so, how do you do it? I thought I just read somewhere that it is not recommended but no clue why. But, also remember I have read ppl doing this.

I am currently having a mini supply crisis (a couple of bad days at work led to less pumping which led to less milk). I am going to start power pumping tomorrow but in the mean time, my DCP recommended mixing formula with BM. I have no problem with supplmenting bc we had to do it before for other reasons but DS won't take formula anymore. He will drink like 1 oz and then refuse. I gave the go ahead today for mixing and he did fine. It is only like 1 or 2 bottles.

TIA

Re: Mixing BM and Formula?

  • I do 2-3oz breastmilk and 1-2oz formula, depending on how much milk I have. I always have formula mixed and in the fridge, so I just add it in to the breastmilk bottle before feeding Aspen.

  • You can do this if you make the powder + water, then add the breastmilk. Just don't put formula powder in breastmilk without water - I think that's what you're thinking is bad (you would be right).

  • We did it and it is fine to do, as long as you make the formula as the instructions say (like PP said) and THEN add that mixture to the BM.
