and last...does Low lying placenta always = C/S?

The u/s tech told me today I have a low lying placenta.  Is that the same as placenta previa?  I didn't see the doctor today.  I saw her two weeks ago and will see her in 2 more weeks to go over u/s results at my next appt.

the 20w mark just kind of fell b/t appts b/c we moved last appt back a week b/c we went to Florida.

Does it usually move up/out of the way or am I headed for C/S?  Tech said it would be something they would keep an eye on?

  • Most of them move up out of the way.  Low lying is close to the cervix, but not covering it like a previa.  I had a complete previa at 19 weeks with my second, and it had moved out of the way by 28 weeks.

  • Usually a low lying placenta will clear itself up. They will watch it to see that it moves out of the way of the cervix instead of moving closer to it and becoming a previa.  I had a low lying placenta in my first pregnancy and they gave me several extra ultrasounds and by 34 weeks it was completely out of the way and I was fine.  My perinatologist put me on pelvic rest for it, although my OB felt that was unnecessary (I followed it to be on the safe side).

  • at 17 weeks I was dx'd with a low lying placenta.  At 24 weeks when they did a repeat U/S to check the status, it had moved up.  Ditto PP that said low lying = attached close to the cervix, but not covering it.  Per my OB, if the only "complication" at delivery is a low lying placenta there is no need for a c-section. HTH.
  • Diddo pp.  I'm a L&D RN and low lying placenta is just that...a low lying placenta.  Close to the cervix but no portion of it is covering the cervix.  If part of it was you would have marginal placenta previa or complete placenta previa it was fully covering the cervix.  Most often it moves up and out of the way.  If you do end up with placenta previa, that would mean a c/s.
