Filling a cavity while breastfeeding?

Has anyone had a filling while breastfeeding? I have a small cavity and the dentist said that if she did use (I assume Novocaine) it is transmitted in breastmilk but that it should be ok. Just wondering if anyone had experience with this or if anyone had asked their dr.

Re: Filling a cavity while breastfeeding?

  • I had fillings and a wisdom tooth removed while bfing Lily.  I let them numb me, but not put me under for the extraction (what a PITA finding a doc to do that :).

I had no issues, but did not take pain meds either.

  • Thanks! It is a very small cavity but I'm afraid not to be numb.

  • I've had 2 fillings (the only 2 of my life!) while BFing- other than almost biting my lip off afterwards trying to eat a sandwich, it didn't affect me at all!

  • I got 5 cavities filled while BFing Charlie (yeah 5! eek) and had the novacaine and had no problems. :-)
  • You ladies  make me feel better. I've only had 2 other cavities in my life so this is already nerve wracking for me!

Don't sweat it. If they numb you then it should be a breeze (other than the mental part). My dentist when I was a kid never used anything to numb you when he filled a cavity. Despite good dental hygiene I managed to accrue a large number of cavities as a kid. There are very good reasons that I have dentist issues these days!

And I agree with everyone else, as long as you're not being put under you should be fine breastfeeding wise. But if you're really sweating it you should be able to call either your ob or your pediatrician and ask them.

  • ditto pps - novacaine is no problem.  i haven't had any cavities filled but i had to have minor surgery on my toenails (awesome) and they used novacaine shots in my toes.  good times ;)

  • I am not sure how similar your body is when pregnant-but I had to get two root canals a few weeks ago and the Novocaine was fine for me to have but they did not include epinephrine.  Basically, if I understood correctly, this just mean that the Novocaine wore off quicker.  However, filling a cavity is a lot quicker than a root canal (two at that) so they may not use that to begin with.

  • I got two root canals done while BFing, and no trouble. I talked with my nurse line, and if you need pain meds after, vicodin is better than codeine. However, I was fine with just ibuprofen.
