I always go onto the infertility board or the TTC over 35, but I find most of the info is US based. I really would like to talk about what kind of money it will cost to go through IUI and/or  IVF. Currently waiting for a refferal to Specialist. Just trying to prepare myself for the immenent shock of the cost. Are there any of these things that are covered by OHIP?

Hi there! I did a couple of IUIs in 2007/8. All appointments, testing, and monitoring (ultrasounds and bloodwork) are covered by OHIP. Infertility meds and most actual ART procedures are not.

Clomid is pretty cheap -- I think it was $30-$100 per cycle, depending on your dosage. Injectable drugs (I used Gonal-f) are much more expensive. I think I spent about $2,000 on Gonal-f for one cycle cycle. With medicated cycles you will often have to do an hCG trigger shot, which costs about $100.

The cost of IUI will vary by doctor. I could be wrong, but I believe it's actually the sperm-washing we pay for. At my RE, it cost $400 for a single IUI and $600 for back-to-back IUIs.

I didn't have to do IVF, but my RE brought it up as a possibility once and I think he said it would cost $10,000-$12,000. If you needed ICSI or PGD or what have you obviously it would be more.

Good luck! Let me know if you have any more questions and I'll try to answer them.

Hi there. I only have a few minutes, then back to tending to my IVF success story.

We did 4 cycles - a mix of frozen and fresh.  As for costs, we paid about $8000 for the fresh IVF itself.  Freezing the embryos was $800 and storage fees are about $200 a year.  The drugs were about $5000 per cycle, but could be more if you need a higher amount of stims.  If you do get pregnant, you can expect to be on some sort of progesterone support until about 3 months.  I'd say that was another $200 a week for me.  If you have a benefit plan, check it, as mine did cover the drugs, but my booklet didn't say it would.

Frozen transfers were about $3000, plus drugs, which were probably about $500-$1000, plus the meds after.

    PGD usually adds about $5000.

OHIP will cover diagnostics, blood work, and IUI (except for sperm washing) at my clinic it was $350 per wash.  OHIP will alsol partly fund IVF if you have bilaterally blocked tubes.

Hope that helps somewhat.  I always forget about this board, but if you have any other questions, feel free to page me on the Canada Nest board. Good luck.  I hope your path is a short and successful one!

I'm just getting started with an RE and I live in Alberta, so I can't really answer your questions about costs.   But I have found the website www.ivf.ca has a lot of information about infertility in Canada.  There are some really nice ladies on the forums on that site that could probably answer your questions about IUI/IVF costs.

This is another site that has great information on the different procedures.  https://www.soft-infertility.com/info.php

It sounds like prices are different everywhere.  The clinic I went to charged $100 management fee and then $200 for sperm washing for IUI.  The medications are sometimes covered by your drug plan (mine didn't, but I have several friends that lucked out).  The clinic was able to direct me to the least expensive pharmacy for the drug I took.  All the bloodwork, ultrasounds etc. were covered, however, if we moved to IVF I would have had to pay for bloodwork in additon to the procedure and drugs.  Luckily IUI worked on the 2nd try.

    Good luck!
