WDYD: when "friends" use the "R" word on FB?

It burns me up when I see friends on facebook use the "r" word to poke fun of something/someone.  But I admit that I don't ever say anything.  Most of my "friends" on fb though are people that I just went to high school with or used to work with and don't really talk to on a daily basis so I don't want to get into it with them over a social networking site.  Cowardly on my part, I know.  However, if it was someone I was close to I would definitely say something albeit privately and not go calling them out on the post.

And as an aside....the nurse at my daughter's pedi office used the "r" word to describe a halloween costume she had to wear as a kid.  I was very taken aback.

  • Honestly? I am so over the whole "R" word drama.

Is is offensive? Yes, of course and I do not condone the use of it. Many words are offensive. I just chose to not let it bother me anymore. So many other things to worry about, kwim?

It is a word. It only has as much power as we give it.

  • I just got into an argument with my bio dad last night on this subject. He is a very smart man and get into heated political debates on FB. He sounds so intelligent right up until the R word is used. I told him as much.

He swears I am a liberal because I am offended by the word. I had to tell him the story of being chewed out on here (Thanks PMQ! :)) for using the word. I completely offended someone and was not proud of it at all. I am teaching my kids to have compassion and I would rather them expand their vocabulary.

He admitted his vocabulary sucks and we moved on. Hopefully, he won't say it anymore.

    word.

  • I find lots of FB posts offensive or ignorant.  I rarely comment on them to inform the author of my opinions.
