Austin Babies

Kid-related relocation ?s

We will be moving to Austin sometime in the summer of 2011 (so a little more than a year from now)

I saw the daycare post so now I'm a little nervous about what we will have to do to assure care for our as-yet-unconceived child that we are planning to TTC in the next couple months.  We are coming from DC where daycare can be a bit crazy with the waitlists and such.  We were lucky with DD that we had several options and never really ran up against wait lists, but we did start early.

I currently work PT and plan to continue when we move.  Are PT spots in Austin as difficult to come by for infants as FT?  How much would a PT nanny cost?  (I will be working from home)

As for my DD, we will be moving in the summer and not sure of the part of town yet.  How hard is it to get a child enrolled in K quickly?  Should I be able to get her enrolled in the neighborhhood school even if class starts a couple weeks later?

Re: Kid-related relocation ?s

  • I don't know too much about daycare, but I would expect to pay a part time nanny at least $10 an hour.  I think some charge up to $15 an hour.  Maybe someone with a nanny can chime in with more details?

As for kindergarden, if you are enrolling your DD in public school you can do it whenever.  You have to have some kind of proof of residency I think.  When I taught, we would have kids enrolling after school started for the year and I think they will occasionally even hire more teachers and create another class at the elementary level if the enrollment gets high enough.  One of my friends was hired to teach 1st grade after the school year had already started.

  • We moved to Round Rock exactly one week before Jakob was to start kinder.  We didn't have any problems getting him enrolled.

PT daycare is tough around here because it seems the centers only consider Mon Wed Fri or Tue Thur programs.  They don't do half-days.

PT spots seem even harder to find than FT spots, especially for infants.  Sorry to be a Debbie Downer!

Don't worry - this is the info I need.

I could maybe do full days, although I would prefer half days.  I currently do 3 full days for DD at a center.  But I would like to be able to walk DD to and from kindergarten.

How much would a nanny or mother's helper be?  I will be working from home, so I would always be there (DH might as well, but definitely me).  Thoughts on that?

We also hope to have my parents move with us, but I would prefer to use them a couple days a week and a nanny a couple days a week.
