Is there anything I can do to help/fix this?

I've mentioned before that DD isn't a big fan of the swaddle. At night, I double swaddle her and she fusses sometimes at first, but then usually goes to sleep fairly quickly and sleeps until her first feeding, usually around 2-3.

Here's my problem: Once she wakes up for her first feeding of the night, she's fussy from that point on. It's like once she's awake, she realizes she's swaddled and she spends the rest of the night trying to get out of it. I keep her swaddled to feed her because I was trying to keep everything as low key as possible. I just get her out of the co-sleeper, feed her, and put her back down. Is there anything I can do to help her go back to sleep and stay there after that first feeding?

  • My first thought is she might be a little bit refluxy after that 2am feed.  Have you tried maybe keeping her upright for 15 min or so afterwards, then putting her down?

  • Not that long (15 min), but, yes, I do try and burp her after every feeding. She's not the best burper, though. Tongue Tied

If she IS reflux-y (and that's just a guess), it's not burping that helps.  It's keeping upright until a bit of the feeding digests and doesn't back up in her esophagus.  We had to keep DD upright for close to 25-30 min or she'd be really unhappy.

Are you open to not swaddling?  We stopped around 4 weeks with DD because she kept fighting it and she started sleeping much better after that.

Yes I'd be totally open to it if I thought it would help her sleep better. It seems to calm her down at first though. Are you suggesting we forego it altogether or just after her first feeding?
