2nd Trimester

How do you respond when people ask how far along you are?

In weeks or months? A co-worker asked so I told her 23 weeks. She said she could tell this was my first child since I responded in weeks, and compared it to when a mother says her child is 23 months old instead of just saying 2 years. Huh? I just say weeks because it's more specific and thats how I've been keeping track myself. ::shrugs::

Re: How do you respond when people ask how far along you are?

  • This is my second and I still respond in weeks.  Because I am nearly 16 weeks, but to me that is a little less than 4 months.  Only one month is actually 4 weeks, and that is February.  The rest or 30 or 31 so 16 weeks and a few days is actually 4 months.

  • After the first trimester I started using months (just to make it easier for slow mental math people!) LOL  (like family and friends) Stick out tongue
  • Weeks because the months confused me.

  • I've started combining the two.  For example - if someone today asked me how far along I am I would say "26 weeks, so just about 6 months."  Next week I'll say "27 weeks, so I'm right at 6 months."

If I tell them weeks, they want to know months....

If I tell them months, they want to know weeks...

So, I just tell them both! :-)

  • I usually say weeks just because I know that off the top of my head.  If they ask how many months, I'll say the month for them.

For DS, when someone asks how old he is, I say 4 or 4 1/2, not 56 months.

I've just started using months and telling people I am 5.5 months.  It seems easier than 22 weeks to me.

However, I still talk weeks with all of my other mommy friends.

  • I tell people both.
  • I say it in weeks! Probably because thats how it shows up on here, and the updates are in weeks!! lol

  • I combine both as well. So, I'd say "I am 23 weeks so I'm in my 6th month".
  • Weeks.  Months are too vague.

  • Weeks and months, so "I'm 22 weeks, about 5 months along".

  • I think if you're not pregnant, then you don't think in weeks.  I never understood the weeks thing until I got pregnant.  So I just simplify it for people because I know that's really what they're looking for.  So for 18 weeks, I say I'm 4 1/2 months.

  • I disagree on the weeks vs months. Now most doctors and patients speak in terms of weeks as it's more precise, hence why women answer it that way. And, IMO, easier to track weeks. I don't know what day of the month it was anymore, so I don't know when it would change! I guess months based on weeks/4, but that's off, too.
  • It depends on who it is.

But I say my son is 23 months old.  At least for another week. :(

  • at first I respond it weeks and I usually get a funny look, so then I tell them the months.

  • This is my second and I respond in weeks - so do all the other 2nd+ time moms I know.  It's more accurate.  As pp said the only month with 4 weeks is Febuary.

  • Right now, I tell tham I am about halfway done.  If they have kids, I tell them in weeks.  If they don't, I tell them in months (which is hard for me to figure out).
  • I'm constantly thinking in weeks -- if I was counting in months, I think I'd go crazy! I like meeting weekly milestones :)

  • I think it's hilarious when I respond in weeks and people look at me like I'm the idiot. It's the more accurate response.

I am going to try and keep track of the months just to help people out I guess.

  • I use months because generally people who ask you....really aren't that interested. And doing the math is just too much for them. I feel like people ask questions just to ask, it's not like they actually care. And I'm talking about strangers here, not family members!

Actually, at 18 weeks, you are about 4 months pregnant.  1 month =/= 4 weeks.

The 9 months is calculated from conception, not LMP like weeks are.  Pregnancies last 38 weeks from conception (40 weeks from LMP, as we all know), so if you divide 38 by 4 you get 9.5 months, however there are more than 4 weeks (28 days) in most months.  This means that pregnancies last just a bit more than 9 months from conception.

The easiest way for me is to work from my EDD back.  I am due 9/2, so on May 2nd,  I will be 5 months (have 4 months left).  That gives people a relevant timeframe.  They know that in 4 months I will be very close to giving birth.

This was always confusing to me until I thought about it.

  • I use weeks, but for non-mommy types I try to give a little additional frame of reference. So I might say, "I'm 20 weeks, right at the halfway point"

  • Its my 3rd and last baby I say weeks. Then if some one ask how many months I am ill tell them im 5.5 almost 6 months.Smile

  • I respond in weeks. I don't understand why people would respond in months.

This. And if I am feeling really lazy or grumpy, I just say "well I'm more than half way there!"

  • I respond in months. Most people who aren't pregnant seem to refer to pregnancy by months.

  • I switch it up. It's pretty funny, when I tell someone that I'm 18 weeks, they're like "you're really sticking out there for that early", but when I say 41/2 months they're like, "aw, your bump is so tiny". Weird huh?

    This exactly!

  • I use both, depending who I'm talking to. Before I got pregnant I didn't even know that pregnancy was 40 weeks, and if someone told me they were 24 weeks it wouldn't mean much to me. Apparently I'm not that quick with the math :)
