3rd Trimester

a potentially dumb question about carter's clothing sizes

I bought 3 month clothes yesterday, 3 pairs of shorts, 3 t-shirts, 2 rompers, and a pair of denim short overalls.

Are they 0-3 months, or 3-6 months?  I want to pick a coming home outfit but I'm not sure how clothing sizes run... someone said previously that generally 3 months means 3-6 months (and 6 months means 6-9 months, etc), but the little 3 month t-shirts I bought seem huge to me while the little 3 month shorts I bought seem small?  Anyone know more about this?

Re: a potentially dumb question about carter's clothing sizes

  • Carter's runs larger than other brands.

    But, according to them:

    3m= 0-3

    6m- 3-6

    9m= 6-9  and so on.

  • 3 months is 3-6 months. For us, Carters runs slightly big. DD has always been in her size/age, but can always wear Carters slightly longer than any other brand. (she is still wearing, with room to grow, 24 months in Carters, every other brand is 2T)

  • Ready for realistic but completely unhelpful information?

    It doesn't matter.  Different LO's are different sizes...DD was born too large for most NB clothes, and outgrew 0-3 month in a few weeks.  My friends twins were in 0-3 month until they were almost 5 months.  That said, until LO is there, I kind of view the size as an average (so, when it says "3 month", *probably* it will fit the average kid, if such a thing exists, somewhere between the 2-4 month mark). (You didn't mention the NB size, Carter's has that, as well, if you haven't seen it?)

    If you want it to fit well, I'd get a coming home outfit in a NB size and one in a 0-3 month or Carter's "3 month" size, otherwise get the larger size since a little too big is do-able.

    I have seen the newborn sizes but didn't want to buy much (if at all) of the NB size because my LO is measuring so big (98th percentile = 11lb baby at 40 weeks gestation, I KNOW ultrasounds can be off but I don't want to waste money at all either... I think I will pick up one or two NB things and keep the tags on and have someone bring them home to wash them if LO ends up needing them, or do you think that will be a PITA?).

    I know I can't plan for everything, which is really frustrating to me, I'm pretty sure he's going to be a big boy and I wanted to make SURE that he'll be able to wear these clothes this summer, since I live in very northern NH and it doesn't stay warm for long, so if he can't wear them til 3-6 months it would be like, August to November and way too cold for shorts!  I need to let go of some of my control issues, and tell myself that my son is teaching me things already, so I can stop worrying about this!!

  • My DD has always worn the size of her age. From my experience I would say that carter's runs big. My DD didn't fit into a 3m until she was 3months old. She was small at birth 6lb. 14oz. I really think it depends on the size of your child.

    For us I would say Carters ran:

    3m = 3-6months

    6m = 6-9months

    etc.

  • I have the strange 'average' kids LOL....3 months fit my DD starting around 2 months until about 4 months.

    She wore a newborn size outfit home.

    This exactly. DS was big and never wore NB and Carters 3 month only fit him till about 4 months. Just don't take off tags until you know how big your baby will be and how fast they grow. No matter what, they will never wear all of it.

  • From my experience with Carter's 3 months meant my son would fit into it through his 3rd month.
  • It also depends on the size of your baby.  At 6.5 months, my daughter can still wear these 3 month Carter's pants.
