Hello! I was wondering how everyone washes their bum genius diapers. I just got some new ones, I looked at the instructions...and I have been washing them TOTALLY differently :x
How do you wash yours? I usually just wash them once with hot/cold water and throw them in the dryer. And I use the usual amount of detergent. I have used the sanitize option on the washer once.
Also, how many diapers do you have total? I'm trying to switch over to bum genius' totally, but currently only have 11.
And do you do entire loads of diapers, or just throw them in with other things? What other things help have help you use them more? I use the kushies liners (which I just throw in the toilet, right?!)
Okay, this became an entirely bumgenius post but I really appreciate the help, I don't know anyone IRL who currently uses them! TIA.
Re: How do you really wash your bum genius diapers?
Bumgenius are our bedtime/going out diaper for the most part. I have 12 total. I use prefolds with covers and do diaper laundry every 3-4 days now that Ds is pottytraining.
I usually do a cold rinse first, a hot wash/cold rinse w/ 1/4 cup detergent and scented vinegar in a downy ball. Sometimes I do an extra cold rinse. I line dry at least once a week and throw them in the dryer every few weeks.
I have washed some of DS's clothes with diapers after the rinse cycle. Or a few towels.
I wash our BGs with everything else, prefolds, fitteds, AIOs, etc. If I were to wash them each as their manufacturers instructed I'd be doing about 3-4 different loads. Hellz no!
I have a front loader in which I just toss everything in every other night. Wetbag and all. Then I do either just a cold rinse or a complete quick wash without detergent depending on how many and how dirty they are.
Once that is finished I start either a stain cycle or a whites cycle (they are the longest cycles on my machine). I select the heaviest load (most water) and the hottest water I can get. Then I set it for delay because I like it to run overnight so they only run a couple hours before I get up in the morning so they don't sit clean and wet all night.
Most times I throw everything in the dryer on medium heat but sometimes I pull out the BGs, covers and other things that I don't want dried but that's not as often as I should.
As for liners.....I find them to be more of a waste and cumbersome than helpful so we don't use them.
Our stash is not pure BGs as we have prefolds, fitteds and AIOs as well but my husband likes the BG pockets best for ease of use. I think we have about 10 or 12 of them.
I have 12 BG in my stash and they are our favorites for daytime (we use other pockets or fitteds and wool for nighttime so we have the BG available for day). I have a total of 20 daytime diapers, 3 nighttime pockets and a handful of nighttime fitteds.
Cold rinse - let it agitate a couple minutes and then do the standard soak/rinse on the machine. Then hot/cold wash with 2 Tbsp of Crunchy clean or to the 2 level for liquid Tide. We have an old classic top loader. Dryer or hang dry (75% line drying, 25% dryer).
I do whole loads of diapers. When the pail gets like 80% full we do the wash - everything in the wet bag and the wet bag too. Pockets, inserts, fitteds, cloth wipes. Sometimes clothing will go in there if they were icky, and sometimes we put the rags that we use to clean up after the dogs.
We used liners at the PB poo stage but stopped because it was an extra step we forgot, and also with a squirmy baby it was too much. We dunk and swish for non-ploppable poops. So nothing else other than the diaper pail (Wahmmies wet bag pail liners), cloth wipes and a spray bottle of water... no other CD accessories.
I wash in a front loader with All Free and Clear HE and I use the sanitary cycle with a prewash and extra rinse. It's the only way the diapers smell clean. I have tried the BG instructions and they just don't smells as clean.
I have 24 BG 3.0s and 2 BG AIO. I also have 6 Smartipants and around 10 random other diapers. I also have 2 kids in diapers. When it was just DD I had 24 BG 3.0s and it was enough to wash every 3 days.

Can you elaborate on the scented vinegar? Do you use essential oils mixed in or something?
GRRR I just wrote out two whole paragraphs and it got lost.
Anyway I have 16 BG 3.0s, 18 BG organics, 8 BG deluxe AIOs for DS. I wouldn't have so many but DD started PTing and won't wear diapers anymore so I have hers plus his now.
I wash mine with a cold rinse, hot wash/cold rinse/extra rinse with Tiny Bubbles detergent and oxiclean. I have to use the oxiclean to get them sufficiently clean or they stink. I also use bleach about once a month. I line dry as often as possible, especially the PUL shells.
