Breastfeeding

so sad tonight

I don't know what is going on but my supply has really tanked this week after a few weeks of struggling up and down.  I'm on my 3rd round of taking fenugreek and it's not helping this time around.  I've tried power pumping and that works for a day, but I work full time and don't have the time to pump more than every 3-4 hours during my work week.  I'm thinking about throwing in the towel but part of me is so emotionally down about it.  I've pumped thre times today and only got an ounce and a half.  :-(

  • Have you tried eating oatmeal? You can also talk to you doctor about a Rx for domperidone to see if it will help.

  • are you pumping in a comfortable relaxed place?  did you pump a lot before you went to work?   How much water are you getting?
  • I have to pump in this private bathroom at work, but even when I'm at home it's the same amount.  I did pump for 2 weeks before I went back to work--that was 2 months ago now.  I get about 6-8 glasses of water a day and have tried the oatmeal thing.  Not sure about taking medication at this point.

  • I couldn't pump for the life of my with my first child. I did find pumping in the morning worked the best so can you try to sneak in a pump before work?  also is your pump comfortable? I found a bigger nipple shield and using the lansinoh cream on my nipples before pumping made huge difference.  I don't know if you are feeling this but I lived in Seattle before moving and there is a huge expectation to bf.  If it isn't workind and causing you stress the stress alone I feel will prevent you from making more milk. Supplement with formula and still nurse when at home if you enjoy nursing.
  • Try eating more soup like Pho, Vietnamese noodle soup. I heard it will give you more milk, my friend tried this & it worked.

  • I've also heard that eating almonds daily helps. Or you could consider encouraging your child to reverse cycle so you can avoid pumping altogether and just nurse at night.
