protein in urine when NOT pregnant?

Anyone ever have this?  I just had to have follow up tests b/c I went in for an possible IUI last month and they found protein in my urine.  I'm not diabetic (was when pregnant so doctor checks me every year) but from what I am finding online (I know, step away from Dr Google), it is a sign of diabetic kidney damage.  The only problem I've ever had w/ my kidneys was one really bad infection almost 4 years ago.

  • OMG E's new pictures is amazing, he is so very good looking!

Anyway I had protein in my urine when I was dieting really hard, are you eating carbs? Any low/no carb diet can cause this too.

  • thanks. :-)

oh I'm definitely eating carbs! LOL

  • It can happen if you have high blood pressure, or long term use of anti-inflammatory drugs.  Have you had blood work done? Anything unusual?
  • I do have high blood pressure--have for years (runs in my family something fierce), but I've never had protein in my urine before b/c of it.  Guess it's getting worse.  :-(
  • I am actually going through this now. I have had protein in my urine since Dec. I had to go and have a renal ultrasound a few weeks ago and they did bloodwork also. The only thing abnormal in my blood was that I came back positive for ANA. I was referred to a nephrologist, who I actually saw yesterday. He is having me do a 24hour urine catch and is doing more followup bloodwork to see the levels of the ANA. I go back to see him in a few weeks. He said at this point the only other thing they can do is a kidney biopsy. But he only wants to do that if my protein levels for 24 hours are really high or the ANA is really high. He also said that a lot of times since I have no other symptoms/diseases that some people just have protein in their urine. There's nothing wrong - they just have it.

Oh I also have a pelvic kidney (my right) and it's a lot smaller than it should be. But he said that would have nothing to do with it either.

Have they done any bloodwork? They can see a lot about how the kidneys are functioning from that.

  • 2Blue--they did bloodwork today as well as another urinalysis.

I hope we both get news that puts our minds at ease!
