s/o of the "R" word

A coworker of mine was discussing names she was planning on for her baby girl. She was telling me that her older sons were getting in on the discussion and were trying some suggestions. When her son said her middle name could be expectant mom's first name, coworker said she told him, "well, no, that would just be gay." I wasn't sure I'd heard her correctly (my ears have been ringing non-stop for me since yesterday), but she continued on for a couple other suggestions and said the same thing.

I got a phone call at my desk, so I had to cut the convo short, but it really bothered me. Both that she said it to me in the office, and that she told her sons that. Sad, really... Sad

  • I don't even think I would notice if someone used the word in my presence.  I don't think any one of my friends/family would either.  Not even my gay aunt.

These "sensitivities" seem to be WAY more noticed here in Nest land.

  • I would have said "words have no sexual preference".  That's what I tell my students so they know I'm not into their using the word gay as a derogatory term and, no, it does not mean dumb like you're using it, and we can move on.
