I need some recommendations on things to do over a half week! I'm going on a short trip out there next week. Feel free to email me, monski at gmail dot com.
Oooh post a recap when you get back - dh and I are planning on visiting there next year because this is one of the places we are considering moving in a couple years.
btw- you can go page poontater on the NC bump/nestie board. She used to live in Austin but now lives in NC. I was asking a few questions about NC a few months ago and she responded.
But really - anything that has cool eateries and local shops, maybe a wine bar or two ... or any parks to go running at in Durham or Chapel Hill would be great to know about! I'll have some time on my own while I'm out there, and I'll have the car. We'll be staying close to the airport.

Sigh. I am so jealous.
OK. Exercise:
Duke Forrest if you are able to get out during the day/ early evening. Don't stay there after dark. It's a safe place, but isolated and easy to get turned around.
If you are looking for places to run after a full day, you could easily run on the campuses of UNC or Duke. Both are very pretty.
Eating/ Drinking:
I am not familiar w/ Durham & Raleigh. But, if you want to hit up Chapel Hill/ Carrboro one night, (or two!) it'd be worth it.
Franklin Street is the 6th street equivalent in Chapel Hill. Favorite bars that won't (necessarily) be over run by undergrads:
Top of the Hill- great for a beautiful day. It's on the corner of Franklin & Columbia. The bar is on the third floor (accessible by stairs, or elevator if you're already wasted) and has a great view of the "goings on" on Franklin.
He's Not Here- He's not isn't right on Franklin, it's kinda set back. You'll see the signs for it, though, as you are walking west on Franklin (right after Columbia). Or, just ask anyone where "He's Not" is. Basically, it's just one big backyard. Don't go there if the weather isn't nice, b/c the actually indoor bar SUUUUUCKS. Also, it's better if you're there w/ a group. People just get a blue cup and hang out at picnic tables w/ their buddies. Definitely not a swanky place. You'd be better off showing up in jeans and a t than something nice.
Carolina Brewery- a good bar/ restaurant. Lots of local brews on tap.
411 West- Good food, good wine. DEFINITELY more upscale than any of the aforementioned bars.
There are loads of bars up and down Franklin- these are just some of my faves.
Weaver Street- the local equivalent to Whole Foods. Small cafe there to eat.
Tylers/ The Speakeasy- Tylers is the restaurant (when I was there, they also had trivia on Wednesday night). The Speakeasy is an attached bar/ pool hall.
Elmo's- There's a location in both Carrboro and Durham. Great diner style food. LOVE their breakfasts.
ETA: Carrboro and Chapel Hill are side by side. Yes, they are "technically" two different towns, but really, you'll see a lot of the grad students and hipsters hanging out in Carrboro.
Oh, and if you need a burrito, Carrburritos can't be beat.
Re: XP: Anyone from the RTP area of NC?

I am! I am!
I'll post more later.
ETA: Where are you going to be? I am from Chapel Hill- Carrboro. Carrboro is like a mini-Austin.

Then, there's Carrboro.
Spotted Dog- Great, laid back restaurant.
