Light bleeding after pap smear, normal?

So, terrifying as it was, I had my first pap smear as Dr said I had to do it either now or next appointment, I got it over and done with. When I got home I noticed some light bleeding, not dark but lighter/brighter. Is this normal? I've read stories of miscarriages after pap smears and now I've got myself all worried.

Re: Light bleeding after pap smear, normal?

  • Yes it's normal, and I highly doubt a pap smear can cause a miscarriage, I don't know if doctors would be so okay with doing them if miscarriage was common.

Even if you weren't pregnant you'd probably spot a little after a pap smear, and with being pregnant, your cervix is uber sensitive and even more likely to bleed some.

  • Totally normal! I bled a little for rest of that day and then it just went away. nothing to worry about... Even the doctor said it gets nowhere near where the baby is!

I'm pretty sure a pap smear doesn't cause a miscarriage. It's fairly normal to bleed afterwards because your cervix is more easily irritated. The bleeding should be completely gone within 24-36 hours. Just keep an eye on it to make sure it doesn't get heavier.

  • It's normal!  As long as it doesn't last more than a day or two.

  • I had a pap smear done a week ago and I spotted too...it's normal!
  • totally normal, i am surprised your doc didn't tell you that you would. That was the first thing my doc said to me before we started.
  • I bled after pap smears even before pregnant.  So at my first pap during pregnancy my Dr. warned me that I would probably bleed for a few days which I did.  Initially it was bright red but then changed to a darkish brown red.  I have been back to OBGYN since and everything is fine with the baby, so don't worry about a little bleeding.

  • Happened to me too at 6 weeks and had a healthy heartbeat at 8 weeks Smile.
