Livia - too much like Olivia?

We really wanted to be different and we're not a fan of the now popular Olivia. Will our child be forever correcting everyone saying:

"No there's no 'O", its just Livia!"

...or am I thinking too deeply about this? With Olivia rising into the top ten everywhere I'm a bit concerned?

Re: Livia - too much like Olivia?

  • I think it's too close...and looks a little made up. What about naming her Olivia and using Livie?

Well Liv Tylers first name is just "Liv" so you might be able to get away with it.
  • Yes she will be saying that because no one will understand Livia as a name. I don't like it but I do like Olivia with nn Livie.

  • Yes, she will forever be saying "there's no O."  And it won't look like a unique name, just that you were trying to avoid Olivia because it's so popular.

  • I am a teacher, and I had a girl who was named Livia.  She was always correcting people about her name.  When I first met her before school started, her mother felt the need to let me know there was no "O" even though I had my pre-printed list and I knew there was no "O"...I say no go on Livia.
  • Yes, it's too close.  Kind of like you forgot the "O"....Olivia is very pretty & classic.  Why mess with a good thing?

  • I love Livia. I used to babysit a girl whose name was Livianna (like anya not anna) with the nickname Livia super adorable girl!
  • I think it's too close.  Why not go with Lydia?  It's similar in style and pronunciation.

I also vote for Lydia if you're trying to avoid Olivia. But this is coming from a woman who has to correct a lot of people now due to the uber-popular "Amelia." (Nonetheless, I still wouldn't have named DD anything but Amalia.)

  • I think Livia is a really cute name, if you prefer it over Olivia I say go for it! Although, like pp you could name her Olivia and call her Liv/Livie/Livia?
  • My friend's alternative to Olivia is Octavia, and she calls DD Tavie (pronouned Tah-v).  It's so cute!

    I love this! LOVE Livie.

FYI --- I know a girl whose name is "Manda" and people are CONSTANTLY calling her Amanda and she always has to correct them. She hates it and I think that would definitely happen in this case too. It could get annoying! Just a thought!

YES, THAT'S EXACTLY WHAT WILL HAPPEN FOREVER.

  • My friend named her daughter Alivia which is close, but just a little different.  I thought it was really cute.  You could also still call her Livia for short.

  • Livia sounds like Libya (the country in Africa) to me. I know, I know: I'm not helping. I'm just sayin...

I couldn't have said it better. I agree with pp about Lydia. Beautiful underused name.

  • I know a woman, who happens to be from Hungary, named Livia.  She introduced herself to me as "Livia, like Olivia, but without the O".  So she totally anticipated the potential for confusion!

  • if you actually like the name Livia over Olivia then go for it. If you are only dropping the O because because you want to be unique and Olivia is too popular for you then I say pick another name or just name her Olivia and call her livie/livia.

Yes, it is too close. She will always be correcting people. Why not just name her Olivia if you like the name, and call he Livia.
