Any tips on having a toddler in an arm cast?

It's only for 3 weeks, thank goodness.

  • I used to apply casts - I'd disagree on the waterproof.  It's not padded, so not comfortable, and much more prone to skin irritation/smell.

I'd do your absolute best to not get it wet.  Don't let him/her stick things in it.  I've found all sorts of things in there....peas, legos, hair ties, pens/pencils.  All those can cause irritation, and he/she can scratch/damage the skin and you'd never know it.  If it itches, give  Benedryl....that should be in your discharge paperwork.

If you don't think you can keep it totally dry, I'd get a water proof cast protector ( most medical supply places should have them).

  • I didn't get to try this when Bella had her cast on but a lady told me to use that saran wrap that press and seal kind for when it's bath time.  She said it worked great.

  • It seemed like for my girls, the best thing to do was ignore it.  THey never got itchy or anything.  After about a day or two they pretty much forgot about it and went about as usual.

What bone did your kid break?  Tay JUST got out of her arm cast.  She had pins too.  Now she's in a sling and that scares me more than when she was in a cast because according to the doc the bone hasn't entirely healed, but they take arm casts off so the movement comes back.  And she runs around and is crazy, and I just worry she's going to re-break it!!!  I want the cast back!!  LOL!  Not really.  But I'll be glad when the next couple of weeks are over.
